Bird With A Broken Wing (pt.3)

"Choi Soobin, Kang Taehyun" the doctor said, walking into the waiting room.
"That's us," Soobin said, as him and Taehyun stood from their chairs.
"Follow me please"
They walked down the hallway, following the doctor, as he led them into a room.
Kai lay asleep on a bed, a few chords stuck in his arms, and a heart rate monitor beeping loudly.

"It seems that Kai has a major concussion, which has caused him to lose his memory, thankfully it's not major enough where the effects are permanent, but he does need to be treated before they are"
Taehyun and Soobin shared the same concerning look as the doctor continued.
"Has Kai gone through any serious trauma recently that you think could have caused this?"

Soobin looked at Taehyun, as Taehyun's face paled.
"Well...uh..I did accidentally push him into a bookshelf the other day"
"How did you accidentally push him into a bookshelf?!" Soobin said in a stern voice
"He had taken my phone and when I was trying to take it back he wouldn't let go, so I snatched it out of his hand, which must've slingshotted him into the bookshelf behind him"
"All that for your phone?"
"I said it was an accident! But he didn't say anything about his head hurting, and I had apologized and he laughed it off and said it was fine, so I didn't think anything of it"

Taehyun felt awful in that moment, he felt it was his fault. He really didn't mean for Kai to get hurt, he was only wanting his phone back. Kai also didn't say that he had gotten hurt from it, so he couldn't have known.

"I see, well there's no exact way to cure a concussion, but I can offer painkillers if his head hurts, and I would say let him rest for a while, don't let him drink caffeine, or engage in physical activity. His concussion should go away within a few weeks." The doctor said, tapping his clipboard.
"Thank you doctor" Soobin said, his hand on Taehyun's shoulder.

"Hey! Where have you guys been? I tried calling you, but it went straight to voicemail" Yeonjun said, as Soobin, Taehyun, and Kai walked into the dorm.
Kai cowered behind Taehyun, another stranger.
"It's okay Kai, this is Yeonjun, another friend of mine." Confusion flashed over Yeonjun's face, as he stared at Taehyun, pointing to Kai, who was still gripping onto Taehyun's shoulder's for dear life.
Taehyun patted Soobin's shoulder, and gestured to Yeonjun, in a way to tell him "tell Yeonjun what's going on" thankfully Soobin understood, and walked over to the couch.

Taehyun took Kai back to their room, and Kai sat on the bed.
"I have a concussion?" Kai said in a soft voice.
Taehyun sat next to him and sighed.
"Yeah..you do.."
"But...how did I get a concussion? Also, how did I get here..? I remember being home and then I woke up here! My dad didn't help me at all, I miss him!"
Taehyun sighed, and turned to Kai.
"Listen Kai, I can't hide this from you any longer, please don't freak out, I know this will be a lot for you to take in, but I just needed to let you know. You got a concussion, you know that, but from that concussion you have lost a...lot...of your memory.."

Kai looked at Taehyun, a blank stare on his face.
"But I don't remember losing my memory! What did I forget?!"
"You forgot what this place was, who I was, who everyone else is.."
"...I knew who you were before?"
"Yeah.."
Kai laid his head in his hands, before smacking it with his palm.

"Kai, why'd you do that-" Taehyun asked
"I'm trying to remember who you are! But nothing is coming to me! I'm so sorry, I wish I remembered, but I don't!"
"It's okay! The doctor said your concussion should be gone within a few weeks, I only assume that means your memory will be back too"
"I guess you're right, I only wish I knew what I forgot, it's gonna drive me crazy knowing that I've forgotten a lot of things, but I don't know what those things are, because I forgot them!"

"Yeah...listen I think you should lay down, the doctor said you need a lot of rest."
"Okay.."
"Does your head hurt at all? Cause if so, I can get you some painkillers"
"It doesn't hurt right now, but thank you sir"
Taehyun sighed
He forgot my name again

— two weeks later —

"Kai, are you awake? I brought you some food" Taehyun said, as he set the bag of takeout on the bedside table.
"Mm? Oh! Thank you Taehyun"
Taehyun stopped in his tracks, and looked at Kai with wide eyes.
"What did you just say?"
"Thank you..Taehyun..?"

A silence fell over them, and chills ran down Kai's arms.
"You know who I am?"
"Yeah..I do.."
Taehyun was speechless, Kai remembered something!
"Taehyun...Taehyun.."
"Yes Kai.."
"I know who you are! Kang Taehyun!"
"You do, don't you?"
"I remember!"

Taehyun ran over, and hugged Kai tightly.
Kai hugged back, his head against Taehyun's shoulder.
Kai pulled back, and looked around.
"Where's Soobin? And Yeonjun? And Beomgyu?"
"You remember them too!?"
"Yeah!"
"I'm so glad! But they aren't home right now, they went to the store, but they are gonna be so happy when they get home!"

"Hey Taehyun.."
"Yeah..?"
"I want you to know, I love you so much"
"I love you too Kai, I missed you so much" Taehyun leaned over, and kissed Kai's forehead.
He stroked Kai's hair, and smiled.
