It's truly fascinating how a person gets reduced to their lowest from a position of power and glory, when they watch their world collapse before them. Especially when there's absolutely nothing they can do about it.

Or in this case, when there's absolutely nothing she could do about it.

Vicious flames ate away at a woman's place of dwelling. She stood several feet away from the structure, but the heatwaves radiating from it made her feel like she was standing right inside the palace. Even her tears had begun to evaporate from her face. The pressure of the flames fanned a few of her strands around. Hopelessness was written all over her delicate features, and it was a miracle how her legs still supported her.

Occasional snowflakes fell from the sky, but they'd melt in an instant after coming in contact with the hot air. Despite the presence of December, the atmosphere of the area was blazing hot. So much so, that the woman felt like her skin would melt off of her bones. She was sweating profusely, and the light blue winter cape wasn't helping her case either. It clung to her back like a blanket of burning coals.

What was once the palace's garden, was now a graveyard for plants. The tree trunks and bushes were scorched to the root. All of the grass had been transformed into ash. The wooden benches that littered the area were burnt to a crisp as well.

"Why?"

The flapping of the flames muffled her cry of misery. Her tears never stopped rolling out, and her eyebrows furrowed together the more she watched her home turn to nothingness. The handle of the sword in her hand began absorbing the heat, until it started burning her palm. But even still, she held onto it as if her life depended upon it.

Because amidst all the heart-wrenching emotions she underwent, there was one that hugged her as support.

Determination.

Her broken expression failed to express the ambition that clouded her mind. It nearly poisoned her. She could feel raw fury coursing throughout her body, almost exactly like the fire that consumed the once-beautiful palace.

The woman was no longer a mere princess that dwelled under the shadows of her parents. She wasn't a child of the country's king and queen, nor was she a royal who many suitors wished to marry.

She was no longer a woman who fell for a prince. A prince that turned out to be her destruction.

"Look at you, Madalin."

His words crawled into her subconscious out of nowhere. They mocked her. His voice once used to be something that she craved to hear, but now, it pricked her ears like needles. It belittled her and worsened her emotional state. Worse than its current condition, at least. But somehow, her perseverance was fueled too.

"I swear on my life."

The woman's venomous words boomed out her mouth, which managed to muffle his voice in her head. Despite the droplets of melancholy dripping down her cheeks, her features had hardened into a stoic expression. There was no time for despair, and she knew it. Mourning would only waste her time.

"If I don't rip your soul out of your body with my own two hands..."

She had no ounce of strength left in her form. Even then, she made an attempt to lift the heavy sword. Its sharp end slowly rose from the asphalt ground. It took a while, but she managed to hold its handle at the level of her shoulders. She then tilted the merciless weapon to rest an edge of the blade on her palm.

"If I don't make you count all the breaths that you've stopped." She carried on, with a fire lighting up her azure eyes. And then, she sliced her hand open with the sword to seal the promise into her own blood. Her emotions had numbed her to the point where she didn't wince at the new injury. Not even when the overwhelming heat burned her wound.

Fat droplets of red dribbled from her palm and onto the pavement. They left bloody splatters beside a few transparent stains of her tears.

"May I burn in hell for all of eternity."
