"Sam don't fucking do this! Wake the hell up!" Colby shook him as hard as he could, desperate to get him to wake up.
Thankfully, Sams eyes fluttered open and he looked Colby dead in the eyes, all of a sudden he seemed terrified, his ocean eyes glossy with the realization that he could die. He could die from playing a damn Ouija board. "Sam! Don't do that again okay? Stay awake!" Colby made Sam sit up a bit thinking maybe it would help him breathe better. Sam was still coughing, not as bad, but he was coughing. "Do you want to try to throw up again?" Sam shook his head. "Jesus fuck Aaron you drive like an old lady!" Colby yelled.
"I'm sorry! I'm trying my best!" Aaron said, guilt in his voice.
Colby took a deep breath, trying to calm down. His anger isn't helping Sam any bit. He looked at Sam, who seemed terrified. His heart broke. "How much longer?" Colby asked.
"Like 5 minutes." Aaron answered. Sam tapped Colby on the shoulder.
"What's up dude."
"Colby...I don't think... I can-" Sam was trying desperately to get the words out.
"Shut the hell up! Yes you can, don't say that! Just breathe! Aaron, drive fucking faster! God damnit we should've called an ambulance!" Colby was flipping shit.
"Calm down! He's gonna be fine!" Aaron yelled.
"You don't know that!" Colby locked eyes with Aaron through the rear view mirror, surprise in both of their faces. Shit. Why did he say that. He looked at Sam, who seemed even more terrified now.
"I- I mean yes we do! Aarons right, you're gonna be fine. I don't know what I was saying. Okay? You're gonna be fine." Colby had his hand on Sams shoulder, looking him in the eye trying to make what he was saying as clear as possible. A single tear fell from Sam's eye, and Colby tilted his head. "Don't do that. Don't cry." He wiped his tear "you're gonna be alright man."
They pulled into the ER parking lot, but Colby jumped out of the car before it even came to a complete stop. He ran over to Sam's side of the car and helped him out. His coughing was getting bad again, thank god they were at the hospital. Him and Aaron helped Sam walk into the ER, but Sam was immediately taken from their hands by other doctors. "Can I go with him?" Colby asked.
"No." A nurse answered. " You need to wait here sir, we will update you frequently." Colby took a deep breath and wiped his face. He sighed as he looked at his wet hands.
"Jesus why am I sweating so much." He wondered aloud.
"Colby." Aaron said.
"What."
"Colby you're not sweating. You're crying." Aaron corrected him, a look of compassion in his eyes.
"Oh..." He wasn't sure when he started crying, but realized Aaron was right. He used his shirt to wipe his face, trying to gather himself. He looked over to the room they brought Sam into, and saw them shoving a tube down his unconscious throat. Sam looked lifeless, pale.  This broke him. He turned around and walked away before breaking down. That was a heartbreaking sight to see, it completely caught him off guard.
He didn't realize it, but he had walked outside. He was standing by a bench covering his face with his hands letting out silent sobbs. He fucking hated this, crying in public. It was humiliating. "Colby?" He looked up and saw Jake approaching him. "Oh my god." Seeing Colby like this made Jake assume the worst. Jake didn't say anything, though. He didn't ask any questions, he just quietly wrapped his arms around Colby and let him cry into his T-shirt. It's ok, he didn't like it anyways.
Colby was trying his best to gather himself, he was trying to take deep breaths, but it wasn't working. The more he tried the worse it got, so he just let it out into Jake's arms. Jesus Christ this was humiliating.
Finally, Colby let go and backed away. "Thank you." He whispered, wiping his tears on his shirt again.
"Of course." Jake said, rubbing Colby's back.
"What time is it?" Colby asked, trying not to let things get awkward.
Jake pulled his phone out of his pocket. "5:04 am." Colby nodded. "We should go back inside, I'm cold."
With that they walked back in, finding Corey and Aaron at a seating aria, talking over a clipboard with paper. "Colby you gotta help me, I have no clue how to answer any of these questions about Sam." Aaron looked up and saw Colby's face. "...but if you need to breathe for a sec I can do my best."
Colby chuckled. "Do i really look that bad?"
"Yes." Jake answered for Aaron. Colby laughed again and took the clipboard from Aaron's lap then sat down to answer the questions Aaron couldn't, which Colby had no problem with. Then, they just waited.

"Are you guys here for Sam Golbach?" One of the doctors that took Sam away asked.
Colby stood up immediately, shaking the hand she offered "yes, yes".
She smiled, not sympathetically, thank god, but in a friendly way. "Hi, I'm doctor Adam's, I've been helping Mr.Golbach today. He's still sedated and is still needing some help with breathing, but he should be totally fine, he is under good hands." Colby let out a sigh of relief.
"Can I see him?" He desperately asked.
She nodded. "I can take him to you now if you'd like." The rest of the boys stood up and followed the doctor to Sam's room.
When they walked in, Colby immediately went up to his bed and held his hand, looking at his always pale face, glad to see it peaceful after all the pain.
"Sup buddy." Corey said, walking to the other side of Sam and squeezing his hand.
"He will probably be out for awhile, but when he wakes up call a nurse immediately, he will likely try to pull his breathing tube out. We will check on him frequently" The doctor walked away with a smile, closing the curtain behind her.
Colby let go of his hand. "I should call his parents."
"Oh yeah, definitely." Jake said. Colby walked out of room and pulled his phone out, dialing Mrs.Golbach's number.
The phone started ringing and he rubbed his eyes, preparing himself for the painful phone call ahead. "Hi Colby, why are you calling so early in the morning? Is everything alright?"
"Hi Mrs.Golbach... I actually have to tell you something and I think you should sit down."
"Okay..."
He took a deep breath. "Sam had a coughing attack...err...I don't really know what to call it. He's in the hospital right now..." his voice cracked. "He has a breathing tube in and is sedated."
"Oh my god..." She choked out.
"They said he will be fine." It came out like a whisper, he was trying not to lose it again.
"So what you're saying is that we should go down there?"
"Uh, I don't know. Because he might get released before you even get down here."
He could hear her crying through the phone. "I'm going to book a flight down there as soon as possible if they keep him longer than a week. Thank you so much for letting us know, Colby." And with that she hung up.
Colby put his phone back into his pocket and walked back to the room, sitting in the chair at Sam's bedside.
For awhile, he just looked at Sam, thoughts consuming him. He never thought Sam would end up in a hospital bed. He always thought he would be the one in his spot, or they'd be in one together.
He wondered what Sam felt right now, if he could feel Colby take his hand, if he could hear the people in the room.
If he knew he wasn't alone.
Colby took his hand again, resting his forehead against the arm of the hospital bed, attempting to do what he's never done before.
Pray.
