He had invaded our space, him and his goon pals. Blood was spilled. I killed, they made me take two lives. Adding to the number of corpses I was already responsible for. Was I feeling horrible? No. All the murders I committed were justifiable.I know I was supposed to be disturbed, frightened of him but I wasn't even though Manqoba was terrified and he tried to prevent me from going outside and running after him.
There was something about him. His eyes reflected compassion, his body movements radiated tenderness, in his voice I could sense affection.
He wasn't a bad guy, not really but I guess circumstances had put him where he was and turned him into what he was. I knew this to be true because the same thing happened to me.
"Hey!" I called out to him before he could exit the gate.
"Do you have a death wish?" He halted and turned to face me.
"No she doesn't, she is going back inside now. Continue walking. Leave my yard, please. Now, off you go. Go on." Manqoba said cupping my shoulders, stirring me back to the house.
I vigorously shook him off my shoulders," just stop okay. I can take care of myself."
Manqoba let me go, "okay, okay. Don't bite my head off." He backed off and walked back inside.
Straightening my t-shirt and closing the little bit of distance between us, I said, " your words of wisdom reminded me of this stupid tv show that I used to watch."
"Oh yeah, what show?"
"Teen Wolf. It was this Alpha of Alphas Deucalion, talking to this other girl called Terresa or Tracy I'm not sure of her name anymore. He asked her just how powerless she was before she was turned into a Kanima. He went on to tell her that in his experience it had always been truly the powerless who were all too eager to demonstrate their newfound strength."
"See, I was right about you. Goodnight." He started walking.
"Thank you!"
I couldn't see his facial expression but judging from the way he stopped and turned and his tone, he was a bit confused as to why I was thanking him.
"For what?"
"Reminding me of my humanity."
He nodded, "make sure you get out of here as early as the crack of dawn. My boss won't let this slide, I'll have to tell him what happened. Just save yourselves and run as far as you can."
He continued, "I'm Tom by the way."
"Sarila."
I watched him as he walked out the gate finally. I sped back inside the house and made sure to lock the doors and clasp all window stays tightly.
Tom arrived at their base around midnight. He had to tell his boss everything that transpired.
To spare his pride and cover his shame, and somehow attempt to save my ass, he suggested their boss recruits me for I could be useful to their gang. He mentioned that it was the only reason why he spared my life with my useless brother, meaning Manqoba.
The boss, whom he called Bra Silos couldn't wait to meet me. He instructed Tom to fetch him his warm coat and gather five more men for they were going to wait on me.
"You mean we're going to spend the rest of the night waiting outside her house?" Tom questioned.
"Is there a problem?"
"No sir, but we could rest for now and go in the morning."
"Where is the thrill in that? Visualize her trying to run and then boom she finds us outside, everywhere, already waiting for her." He displayed a sinister grin.
