Violet's P.O.V

The dates on my calendar felt like they had been torn off in one go. My final year of high school has begun. I groaned loudly and buried my hands in my face. Mrs Bird, our neighbour and the only person in the world willing to wake up at five in the morning to water her roses, stared at me with a funny look. I stretched out a half-baked smile and turned away. The day ahead of me is already turning in the wrong direction. For me, homework and tests aren't the worst part of high school. It's the people I have to see every day. School campus is right around the corner. From a mile away I can spot the freshman's clustered in a corner. Excited about the beginning of their journey in high school life. If I had a time machine I would go back and-

I jolted backwards when a car sped straight past me. My heart jumped to my throat. I bent over. Catching the few breaths of air I had been robbed of. The car moved so quickly, the gush of wind it produced could cause whip lash. I turned my head to the lavish red velvet car. I felt my blood begin to boil. The car door swung open and I took my chance.

"Watch where you're goi-" My words were cut short when the one guilty of almost running me over stepped outside. Joshua Collins. As he stepped out the sun seemed to direct its golden rays on him like a spot like. It was as though the world had him on a pedestal.  His eyes met mine and glossed over me in a second like my very being turned into thin air. If you couldn't tell already, Josh was part of the reason my high school experience was torn out, crumpled and tossed in the bin.

The boy who broke my heart.

Would you believe me if I told you we used to be best friends? That relationship ended shortly after we entered high school. It all began with laughter and ended with cruel jokes and pranks.  Now we walk by each other with a mute button on our mouths. He pretends I don't exist and I act like I don't care.  His gang of friends approached him. I quickened my pace to slip right past them.

"Hey Violet," Aidan yelled, "How was your summer break?" He asked as though he spoke through a microphone. I felt the eyes of others fall on me. The weight of my body shifted from one foot the other.

"Good." I muttered and continued to walk past.

"Yeah, well it's about to get better." He chuckled. As I continued to walk a wad of chewed gum landed directly in the centre of where my foot was centimetres away from being planted. There was no reaction time to delay the movement of my foot. I clenched my jaw as soon as I stepped into its grossness. Aidan along with his friends erupted in laughter. I didn't dare to look. To look and see if Josh is laughing too.

fifteen minutes had passed. You won't believe the level of expertise required to remove this particular wad of gum beneath my shoe. I'm going to be late to my first class on the first day. So much for arriving on time. I want to throw a brick at Aidan. Knowing me, I wouldn't even make it half way to them. I would probably drop it on my foot and then there would be more than gum to worry about. I pulled the door open and everyone's heads snapped towards me. Can this day possibly get any worse? I turned to my side and noticed the piercing pair of dark brown eyes glare at me. It was possible. May day had just gotten worse. My teacher for english class this year is the strictest of them all. Mrs. Trudy. "Detention at lunch." she yelled. I winced at the tone of her voice before shyly walking toward the back of the class and sitting next to my best friend Crystal.

"As punishment you won't be sitting next to your friend," Mrs Trudy said in her raspy voice. I watched as her bones finger swung around and pointed to the back corner of the classroom. The thing about Mrs Trudy is that once she assigns you to a seat, you are expected to sit in that seat till the end of the year. In this moment, that rule didn't bother me. It was where she was pointing. The empty seat next to Josh.
