Armin’s POV

Although everyday my feelings for Eren were getting stronger and stronger, I still had a good reputation to keep. Tuesday rolled around, and after a long day of stressing over the LGBT club and putting up crappy posters, I was finally in the pool locker room. My pulse increased at a dangerous rate and it scared me. I was in a changing room with a bunch of boys. I felt everyone’s eyes on me, expecting me to be a perverted stalker to everyone in there. People think that gay boys are always into seeing others naked… try being on the other end in that situation! I blushed at all of the embarrassing attention and hid in the corner behind the showers. I quickly changed into my swimsuit without anyone seeing me and vice versa. Still self conscious, I pulled my swim shirt over and looked in the mirror. Sadly, I had to wear a bathing cap for my hair, and so I grabbed that, put it on, and got in the cold showers. Finally, the last one out, I was in the pool. My eyes couldn’t help but drift over to… well, guess. I came more alert when I realized what I saw. Eren was talking to a girl. A girl with… oh jesus… way too much skin showing from her strapless swimsuit. She laughed at him and said something while dunking him underwater. Eren resurfaced a couple seconds later and returned the gesture, making both of them laugh. I sat on the edge of the pool sadly watching the scene, my legs slowly swaying back and forth through the chlorinated water. I couldn’t deny it now—he really was never going to be more than a friend. The swim coach started saying things that I just blocked out, until he said Armin Arlert and pointed me to the end lane where a bunch of beginners stood slouched over. I reluctantly joined the pathetic group already knowing that Eren wouldn’t be with me; he would be with the highest level swimmers. And with that girl.

My smile returned after a long while when I saw the girl who had complimented my speech on Friday. “Oh, hey, Armin!” She said to me happily. “Hi,” I said to her. “I never really got to introduce myself, did I?” She asked. “My name is Christa.” She stuck out her hand. I took it and shook it lightly. “I didn’t know you did swimming,” I said. “I guess I don’t know a lot about you yet, though…” I laughed nervously.

She smiled. “Yeah, I only just joined. I’m suspecting the same of you?”

“Yeah. I was pretty good when I was in middle school, though.”

“That’s cool. I bet you’ll be moved up a few levels once they see what you can do.”

“Well, I probably wouldn’t have a friend like you if I did,” I said to her, trying to be friendly. Dammit. That was just weird.

She didn’t seem to notice. She put her hand to her heart in a jokingly playful way, and said: “Aw, so sweet.” I smiled. “But really,” I said, “In all serious, I am kind of a loner here.”

Our coach instructed us to get in the pool and do a simple freestyle down to the deep end of the pool. “Christa, you can go first. Armin, why don’t you go after Christa.” We both nodded obediently and swam down. Once we were alone down in the deep end (and thankfully the coach was giving some other lecture to the other kids in our level), we resumed to our conversation.

“What about Eren, that boy over there?” She suggested.

I immediately reddened and looked down.

“Ooooh, you like him!” She said with a grin.

“N-no, I really don’t. I’ve been good friends with him since I first moved here.

“Mm-hmm,” she said smiling, obviously unconvinced.

I rolled my head back and groaned. “Whatever.”

She laughed. “Knew it!”

This girl’s ok. Chatty, but ok.

“But in all seriousness, do you have a legitimate crush on him?”

“Since 8th grade,” I replied with a melancholy tone. “But he’s straight.”

“How do you know?”

I nodded my head towards Eren still flirting with the same girl.

“Lesbian,” Christa said matter-of-factly.

“What?” I looked at her in the eye.

“Lesbo,” She repeated.

“No.”

“Yep.”

“No!”

“Yes!” She said laughing.

“How do you know that?”

“She’s my best friend. Her name is Ymir,” She said.

I shook my head in utter disbelief. “B-but… she’s acting exactly like a straight girl.”

She shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know what to tell you! She is definitely lesbian. She's probably just trying to impress a guy. I'm pretty sure she isn't out of the closet. She's kind of all over the place, though.”

My mind raced with thoughts I couldn’t read. Relief? Discomfort? Surprise? Confusion? … All of the above?

“So, you’re a junior?” She asked. I nodded. “Cool, I’m a sophomore,” She said.

I looked at her. Not trying to be rude, I shyly stuttered: “R-really?”

“I look like a 5th grader, right? I know. I don’t really know why I’m so small.”

She looked to be just about peaking 4’ 9”.

“Who knows, maybe I’ll become 6 feet in the next year. I have absolutely no idea!” I laughed. “Been there, done that,” I said, immediately regretting it. I slapped myself in the face, but Christa just kindly laughed.

After plenty of swimming, conversation, and not listening to the teacher, swim practice finally ended. “Nice really meeting you, Armin,” Christa said with delight. “I’ll see you tomorrow!” I smiled. “See you,” I said and waved. I don’t have any classes with her, of course, also I don’t really know why I would be seeing her tomorrow…
