Mia
What a long day. Mom and dad came home a few hours ago and the party has been in full swing ever since. Most of the guests have left already but the guys are in the kitchen and my mom, Brooke and Eva, my mom's best friend are all in the living room. I join them and basically throw myself into the armchair and take off my heels. “mom, my inheritance best be good because I am exhausted.” my mother rolls her eyes and smiles sarcastically at me, “sorry dear, your father and I are leaving all our money to yours, your brothers and sisters better halfs when you all have one. You know, sort of like compensation for us providing faulty goods.” I give her the most sarcastic smile I can muster up as a Chloe and Grace join us in the living room.
“hey Grace, mom thinks all her children are basically faulty equipment.”
Chloe laughs as Grace shrugs “she’s not wrong.” Eva’s eyes light up as soon as she sees Grace “there she is, how are you gorgeous girl” Grace gives her a smile, “I’m fine, thank you Eva.” “oh I’m glad, Hunter misses you, he said he sent you a gift for Christmas.”.
Mom speaks before Grace can respond, “oh he got her a collection of first addition books from some author she likes, so thoughtful that boy.”
I can't help but snigger at that, “Mom, he used to take all her toys off her when they were little, then cut her hair during an English class, and a lot of other stuff.” I laugh as I remenice on the bad boy that used to follow my little sister around like a lost puppy before I realise something, “wait so Hunter is who got you those books? I didn’t realise you still spoke to each other”
Grace goes beetroot red, “we don’t”
Chloe and Brooke look confused before Chloe speaks. “wait, I’m lost who is Hunter”
I answer because I can see Grace is uncomfortable "Hunter is Eva’s son, he always played pranks on Grace, he goes away to school now, he left last year. But apparently not without sending my baby sister gifts” I waggle my eyebrows playfully at Grace. We sit for a while longer remenicing about when we were all younger when I look at Brooke I notice that she's went really pale and is sweating, "Brooke, you okay babe?" I ask but before she can answer me she goes limp. Shit. Shit. I can feel the tears running down my cheek as I'm full of panic, "Mia, go get your dad and brother sweetie" my mom says calmly. Before I leave the room though I notice the blood starting to run down the inside of Brookes legs.
I rush into the kitchen where the guys are laughing and joking. I must look awful because as soon as they see me and take in my tear stained face Nate jumps out of his seat and runs to me, “are you okay? What happened?” he asks frantically. I looks at him and sob. I want to breakdown but this isn't about me, I turn to Joey, “Brookes collapsed and there’s blood.” the image of Brooke and the blood starting to treakle down her is too much and I break into sobs and turns back to Nate as I cover her mouth with my hand to muffle the cries. I rest my head on him, “there’s so much blood” Joey rushes into the living room and we're all right behind him.
My mom has Brooke in her arms, Chloe is on the phone to the ambulance and Eva is hugging Grace as she cries. Joey runs over to Brooke, “hey, baby, cmon, wake up Brooke”, shes lying limp in his arms, “Chloe, how long is the ambulance going to be?” she looks at him with tears streaming down her face, “they’re um they’re on their way.”
We wait for what feels like ever before the ambulance arrives and we all follow it to the hospital. Nate wraps a protective arm around me and I snuggle closer to his side. How can a day change so much, I just hope Brooke and my nephew are going to be okay.
