The only thing my mind could focus on right now was the thick grey clouds flying out of my mouth, that sensation of floating around the room, carelessly and empty minded, was vital when your brain had so much to worry about on a daily. Taking another puff of my neatly rolled up joint, I slightly bobbed my head to the beat playing in the room, before an hand nudged my arm.
"Nigga, you heard what I just said?"
I glanced to my right, my head feeling heavier than a brick. Kendrick, or Dot, stared at me with his face all a scrunched up, probably cause I've muted him outta my mind for the past couple of minutes. I ran my hand down my face and cleared my throat. "Yeah, nigga, I heard it."
Not buying it, he sucked his teeth and looked ahead at the young woman singing inside the studio booth. Solána, also known as Sza, was in there singing about real niggas not deserving pussy. I thought the song was bold and provocative, but that's Solána for you, I liked that unapologetic vibe of hers. And I guess Dot liked it too cause he decided to spit a verse on the track.
"I'on know what's goin' on witchu, but you've been out of it lately."
Blowing out the smoke, I shook my head, "Ain't nobody out of shit. I'm listening to you."
He stared at me again, Dot knew me well, probably the only nigga who really knew me like that, we were brothers from a different mother-soul brothers, or whatever they call it, and when I wasn't 100% honest about something, that nigga knew it, and vice versa. But he also knew me enough to know not to push me into saying anything I didn't wanna say, so if I tell you that I'm good-I'm good.
"Aight foo'," he unlocked his iPhone, and went to Instagram, before showing me a series of pictures posted during July of last year. I glanced at the account's username, @thahoodphotographer, followed my a blue check mark.
The pictures represented different aspects of the things you'd witness in the hood, but also visuals that seemed to have a deeper meaning to them. The caption said the following:
