One year.
It had been a year since the Battle of Hogwarts. Twelve months everyone prevailed against Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters.
And since then, George had to live without his twin brother.
George remembered during the first few months without him, he'd fall into the blackest of melancholies but you were always there to pull him back to the surface. He wished nothing more than for Fred to be next to him, but when George dug Fred's grave himself in the garden behind the Burrow, he had come to terms that he really was gone.
George stands in the peaceful garden, his heart in his throat, quivering with suppressed sadness, over Fred's headstone.
Ron and Harry had helped him de-gnome the place the day prior by his mother's instructions, and so there wasn't anything in the way to interrupt his racing thoughts today.
George inhales deeply and crouches close to the beautifully decorated headstone, which is adorned with flowers from friends and relatives. As he gazes at Fred's name, he delicately brushes the smooth surface of the stone.
"I got something for you today," George says quietly then takes a moment to look back at the Burrow to see through the kitchen window.
A faint smile landed on his lips as he watches you, the love of his life, helping Molly prep dinner. The two of you laughed at a small mishap that had occurred in the kitchen. Your laughter didn't reach where George was but it might as well have. He could replay your kind laughter in his ears, the sound that would lift a veil from his eyes and allow him to see the world more vividly.
With trembling hands, he reaches under his coat and pulls out a silver ring, which he sets on the edge of Fred's headstone.
"We're married, Freddie. Just like you said we'd be," George whispers, showing Fred his own left hand with an identical ring. "You should've seen her. She was so beautiful in her dress."
George chuckles, sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck. "Really unfair you couldn't be there, I thought I was going to pass out when I saw her walking down the aisle."
As his laughter dissolves, his lips turn back into a straight line. "I know you wouldn't want us sulking around so much but we're getting by one day at a time."
Silence. In some days, George couldn't help but be reminded that even after death, memories have their own pulse.
George gulps, and continues on, "We're gonna be okay. I know that. It's just that I..." His voice cracks. "I miss you, Freddie. I really do."
He pauses to close his eyes, and he breathes in a bit more clearly. "But we'll keep going though. Keep going until it doesn't feel tiring anymore."
