"Hey chica," John said with a small frown, and I walked into the coffee house. It was strange for him to see me here twice a day since I only come in before school starts, and I don't think my appearing at 11 o'clock at night made John worry any less. "Hey John, I'll have my usual with a chocolate cookie," I say as I reach the counter and hand him some money from my back pocket.
"How are the twins holding up?" John asks while taking the money from my hand and giving me my cookie, then spinning on his heel to make my cold coffee. Today marks the second anniversary since my parents died in a car crash. My twin brothers and I were living with our aunt, who was never home much because of her work as a doctor. It's mostly me who takes care of the house and the twins, who are only 4 years old and in preschool. I responded to John with a small smile.
"Silver and Sterling are doing fine, I guess. We skipped school today, thought it was a good idea to spend some quality time together. It turns out it was."
John gives a comforting nod. "They were either attached to my hip or to my leg the entire morning, but it was better than last year; at least they weren't crying much of the day, just before they went to sleep."
"I'd ask how you're doing, but it's obvious—you're here at midnight—that your day hasn't been any better," John says over the counter, hoping to hug me. John has always been like a big older brother to me since my parents died and has helped me with taking care of the boys when I need to rest or catch up on homework. Pulling back so he could look at me, he continued.
"I know I can't stop you but be careful when you go to the harbor; I've seen some strange people lurking around there." John warned, knowing I usually go there after coming here. Nodding, I hugged John again, said bye, and headed toward the exit. By the time I had reached the harbor and had sat down on the bench, my cookie was gone, and I was halfway through my coffee. Enjoying the peace and quiet, I looked up into the sky and tried finding some constellations, remembering their stories that mom used to tell me when I was younger.
Out of nowhere, a pair of arms pulled me to my feet and smothered my screen with a meaty hand. I tried to fight back, but a cloaked figure came out of the shadows and shoved a cloth over my mouth and nose. Something sickly sweet burned down my throat and nostrils and made my head instantly cloudy. I realized too late that it was a sedative. I tried to hold my breath and fight, but I couldn't escape the iron grip on me. The more I tried to resist the darkness, the more my nose burned, and my head spun; the last thing I remember was a bag being pulled over my head and burying me in darkness.
