The Way Back

Final Goodbyes

While watching as Tony's wreathe drifted out onto the lake and sadness had taken over every hero standing there, Steve Rogers was forming a plan in his head. Shortly after the funeral ended, he was to return the stones back to their original place before Thanos ever had access to them. He knew what he had to do to make everyone happy and for one of the first times ever, he was thinking about himself along with everyone else. For once, he was going to do something for himself after all the stones were returned. He would be with the love of his life.

After the field had cleared, Steve pulled Bucky, his best friend since childhood, aside to tell him his plan. Steve would return the stones, live his life with the woman he loves, and in the end, Steve would retire the name of Captain America and pass the shield onto Sam Wilson.

The two men walked over to the time travel pad where Bruce was waiting to send Steve back into the past where he would return the stones. 

"Be careful, Steve." Bruce warned. They both knew of the dangers of time travel, but they both also knew that leaving the stones in the present would cause chaos in the future.

Steve nodded and walked over to Bucky and Sam. He hugged Bucky, the only one who knew he wouldn't be coming back the same. Bucky held him tighter than he ever had before, hesitating to let his best friend go. This was the end of the line. This was when they parted ways. 

Bucky whispered to Steve, tears filling his eyes and blurring his vision, "I guess this is the end of the line, huh?"

Steve hugged Bucky once more, smiling to cover up his sadness, "Yeah, Buck. I think it is."

Bucky nodded and smiled back at Steve. "I'm happy for you Steve, I really am."

Steve turned to Sam to tell him goodbye, "Take care of the old man for me." Steve chuckled.

"Oh no no no. That's you're job," Sam replied, smiling.

"I have other things I have to do," Steve said, looking over at Bucky who was smiling back at him. 

"What are you guys up to?" Sam asked, looking back and forth at the twinkle in both Steve and Bucky's eyes.

Without replying Steve walked over to the platform, putting his helmet on. Steve gave Bruce a thumbs up as he prepared himself. Bruce pushed a couple buttons and pulled a lever or two and with a bright flash of light, Steve was gone. 

"How long is this gonna take?" Bucky asked. He was highly anticipating Steve's arrival since he knew what it would entail.

"One minute for us, for him, as long as he needs." Bruce replied. Checking a timer every few seconds.

There was another bright flash on the opposite side of the time travel spectrum and suddenly Steve was back standing on the military base in New York. He heard men shouting in the distance and all of a sudden he heard higher pitched, female voice, with an English accent. He knew who it was right away. Peggy Carter. A woman he had loved since the beginning.
