a boy walked slowly, kicking at stray pebbles on the concrete. he had parked his motorcycle a block away before locking it and making sure that his keys and phone were well inside his pocket.
the moon was shining brightly, a crescent like a tiny flashlight, illuminating the night. a few lights flashed from few single-family homes and tiny apartments adjacent to the park.
this park was one of an average neighborhood's ; slightly messily-cut grass, fading paint on the basketball court, a small but intricate playground mirroring the street, park benches known for young children, parents, and adolescent couples alike, and a small gate to the community pool : these all stood in front of the boy's eyes.
but what he was looking expectantly towards was the basketball court. as expected for a monday evening, the entire park was completely empty. the boy's pocket vibrated, and he struck out a slender hand to take out his phone.
Niki: sorry sunoo, im volunteering late at the hospital tonight, there's this crazy old man who thinks im his grandon ; i wont be able to make it today, see you tomorrow at school!
Sunoo: no worries. good luck with him
sunoo sighed and turned away from the basketball court. he walked aimlessly down the street, he didn't intend to go back home to beatings anytime soon. sunoo knew the whole city like the back of his hand due to frequent nighttime wanderings. he felt like he was more at peace in the streets of seoul rather than his apartment ever since...
he put the thought out of his mind.
faint music was trailing out of the windows of a nearby home. sunoo stopped and listened out of curiosity, for he had never in all of his memories of the city stumbled this. he figured either they must have moved here recently, or he was just being paranoid.
the piano chords continued, and sunoo couldn't help but feel numb of shock. the memories that he'd tried to push down for years threatened to come back once again. panicking, sunoo ran across the street, attempting to avoid the music, only for him to trip and fall. frantic, sunoo took a deep breath, but that only stirred up more lost pictures in his mind.
"no," he muttered. "please," but there was no stopping them. shaking, the boy started sobbing, both grief and sorrow washing back on him.
