Wait...No...
I don't...
I don't want to die...
---
My head swam, my consciousness adrift in a dreamlike daze. The world was dark, so dark that I couldn't tell if my eyes were shut or not. I tried to blink, but I felt nothing. There was no smell, no sound, no heat or cold, I tried to touch my face but couldn't even feel the most basic sensation of my shoulder pivoting, nor the tendons of my hands and fingers flexing and relaxing as I moved them. Nor could I feel anything similar for my legs, or my lips, not even the weight of my tongue in my mouth. All that I could perceive were my own thoughts.
I know that I died. I could vividly recall this, perhaps so vividly thanks the lack of other senses to dilute it. I didn't really want to, though, so I turned my thoughts to other things. I wondered if anyone would notice that I was no longer around. My roommate for sure. I'm not sure how she'd feel about it, though. We never really talked. I suppose my professors will also notice, given I had a couple projects I was obviously no longer able to turn in, but people drop out all the time. Then again, it's only a matter of time before someone finds me, if it hadn't been noticed right away...
I figuratively shook my head. I needed something else to think about, anything.
~Gotcha!~
As if to answer my prayer, I heard... Well I perceived someone saying something. I couldn't hear anyone's voice, I just suddenly knew that someone had said this.
~Ha ha, yeah. The river's a real trip, hunh?~
What in the... Did this person hear me?
~Yeaaah, ain't much other ways to communicate when you got no mouth. Ya get used to it.~
Where am-
~Hang on, let me guess. "Where Am I," "Who are you," and "Am I dead," right?~
...Well I already know that I'm dead.
~Ah, nice. Sometimes I gotta prove to people that they're dead, it gets real harrowing sometimes. S'pose I shoulda known, you got no connections to your world, yeah? Nothing you feel bad about leaving behind?~
Um... Yeah...
~That's rough, buddy. What made you change your mind, then?~
I don't know, I... Wait, how do you know about that? And come to think of it, you knew I was going to ask about what's happening, but you didn't actually answer my questions!
~Yeah yeah, "all will be revealed in time," or whatever. Hang on juuust a second...~
Before I could question anything more, a rush of sensations hit me. Suddenly all of the feelings that had numbed came back. I could feel the weight of my own body, which was sitting on some sort of stool that was gently swaying. I heard the sounds of water and a faint wooden creaking. My eyes opened.
I found myself in a small, wooden boat. Above us the sky was a brilliant field of stars speckled around shimmering galaxies. Below, the water we drifted on glowed, casting everything on it in bright cyan light. A faint mist drifted off of the surface. I could spy the silhouettes of other ships in the distance. Though I couldn't see what was on them, they seemed to be shaped like large ferryboats.
"Hey, not bad."
I jumped a little and turned toward the voice, only just now noticing the person sitting across from me. They were tall and kind of lanky, skin a porcelain white. Their long white hair was tied into a loose ponytail. A grey hoodie hung off their skinny body, under which were a pair of dark jeans and bright red converse shoes. Their body was turned to the side, looking out over the horizon. The longer I stared the more unusual things about them I found. They had pointed ears, and four fingered hands. And as they turned to look at me, I realized their eyes had no pupils, and beneath the hoodie was a shirt with... A diving man? Wait... No... That's...
