When I woke up very early in the morning I felt uneasy. I checked the time and groaned. Why am I awake at 4.15 am? What is that weird smell?
My head hit the pillow again and I sighed. From the corner of my eye I saw something move and turned my head to look at Sam.
There was absolutely nothing there.
Startled I sat up and saw Sam sleeping peacefully on the bed. What the hell…
It can’t be…
My thoughts were interrupted by the closet door creaking. I jumped up and turned on the light.

Sam groaned and buried his face into the pillow. But I didn’t care because I was too busy staring at the open closet door and the clothes spread on the floor.

“Sam!” I managed to screech, making him wake up instantly.

He jumped up from the bed and stumbled up to me.
I simply pointed at the clothes and whimpered. My knees felt weak so I sat down while Sam went to investigate the clothes.
He picks up one of my shirts, checked it out just to see that it’s been ripped and then he sniffed it.

“It smells like burning meat… Like rotten burning meat. What the fuck did you do” he asked with confusion clear on his face.

“Nothing… It was like this when I woke up” I whispered while feeling like throwing up.

“Why don’t we go to my place right now. We shouldn’t stay here. This is far from normal and reminds me of ‘The Exorcist’” he mumbled tiredly while hugging me.

I just nodded and we packed up his stuff and left my apartment.
Both of us were silent during the 10 minutes that it took to get to his house.
After he unlocked the door, let me in and locked it again, we walked to the kitchen to eat something.
He opened the fridge and rummaged through it.

“Is pasta ok? I don’t think there’s anything else that might be good” he sighed and turned to look at me.

“Yeah, pasta is fine.”

I got up to get some plates and stuff while he heated up the food in the microwave.
We ate in silence with only brief glances at each other.
Sam looked scared and I’m very sure I did too.

After we finished eating and washed up the plates, we got up to his room.
I was still tired so I decided to occupy his bed while he started playing some computer game.

With my eyes closed I listened to the sound of clashing swords and men grunting and shouting while struggling to stay awake.
I don’t know how much time have passed but when I opened my eyes I wasn’t in Sam’s room anymore.

When I looked around I saw small houses and further ahead was some kind of square.
The houses were gray and either 1 or 2 stories with narrow alleys between them.
There was no people around which made me feel utterly alone. Where is everyone, I wondered to myself.

When I looked myself over I noticed that I was in a cream-white Victorian dress with my hair curled and falling down my back.

Hold up… I’m in a dress?! When did this happen? And where the hell am I?
I looked around again, trying to spot someone. No such luck…
The road I was standing on was made of cobblestone and I crouched down and put my hands on the ground.
Well, no use just standing here, I thought and got up.

I started walking towards the square and the closer I got, the more I could see of the fountain in the middle of it.
One unnerving thing was that it felt like someone was watching me nearby.
The other was that this town seems totally deserted. A ghost town.

While walking pass the alleys I glanced into each one, still trying to find someone.
Finally I reached the square and I hesitantly walked towards the huge fountain until I was standing right in front of it.
Ok, nothing suspicious here, I thought after I had studied the water and the angel-statues it had in the middle of all 3 parts it was made of.
The whole fountain and the statues looked like black marble. It’s so beautiful.

I decided to sit down on the edge and just relax for now. The water seemed very inviting and I dipped my fingers into the cool water.
My hair played in the warm summer breeze and I closed my eyes with a smile.

This place seemed amazing. Maybe I’m dreaming this because I’m finally free.
Everything is so peaceful here. So perfect. Nothing like my usual nightmares where I’m a small child about to get beaten up by dad.

When I felt goose bumps on my arms, I opened my eyes and looked around.
Nothing as far as I could see and it hasn’t gotten chillier either.

I got up and decided to walk around a bit. Every house was this boring grey and seemed to be made out of concrete.
None of the houses showed any kind of life and it made me feel a little worried.
Trying to look through the windows was useless, since they were too dirty.
The lack of any trees and other plants made me question this place.
Is it normal that there is nothing living around here? I wouldn’t think so.
Deciding that I have only one option left, I stopped in the middle of the street.

“Hello? Is there anyone around?” My voice echoed between the houses.

“Please! I don’t know where I am and I don’t want to be alone. If anyone can hear me, please step forward. I need your help since I…” I trailed off.

Turning back I decided to head back to the fountain.
Hearing footsteps behind me I quickly turned around but didn’t see anything.
This made me feel quite uneasy and I quickened my pace.

After 6 long, agonizing minutes, I was back at the square and quickly walked to the fountain to sit down on the edge.
I put my hands on my lap and just stared at the water. Never have I felt this lonely.
My eyes were tearing up and I tried to blink them away.

Out of the blue I felt a strong breeze pass by and die out. A few tears escaped and I bit back a sob.
Suddenly my insides turned to ice and I felt this overwhelming fear. Something was definitely wrong and I needed to leave right now.
Before I had the chance to even blink I felt something brush my hair aside and a deep mans voice murmured “You are never alone.”
