I wake up with sun shining into my eyes through my dusty window in the attic, where i sleep. I climb out of bed, hearing my mother downstairs talking to someone.
"Hmm, that's weird, father's at work and Max (my brother) is still asleep," I think to myself.
I walk a couple steps over to my dirty, cracked mirror and throw my mousy brown hair into a messy bun. I swipe some mascara over my long eyelashes, dust some blush onto my cheeks, and apply some contraband lip shimmer.

"Madelaine Rose, you come down here this minute!" I hear my mother screaming from downstairs.

Still in my baggy flannel pajama pants and camisole that I slept in, i hurry down the steep stairs and hear a slow, deep British voice saying something to my mother, and then another, higher pitched, faster speaking, still British voice agree with whatever the first man said.

"Who could that be?" I wonder, as I hear the second man say something else and another, third person laugh loudly.

I jump down the last step, turn the corner, and I see them.

One Direction.

I gasp and clamp my fair skinned hand over my mouth in shock, unable to say or do anything except stand there, paralyzed.
The curly one, Harry, smiles warmly at me,
"Ello love, didn't mean to frighten you there"

"Oh, n-no it's fine, no problem, yeah, no, of course, sure," I stutter, barely able to get the words past my lips.

The blonde one (I think his name is Neil, not too sure) laughs at my attempts at a sentence, and Harry elbows him sharply.

My mother glares harshly at me, "Pull yourself together for gods sake Madelaine, we have guests."

I see the small one, Louis, roll his eyes at her and whisper something into Harry's ear. He tries to hide his laugh but fails, and my mother whips around,

"Something funny?"

She raises her eyebrow at the boys, and the one I recognize as Liam, the one with the fluffy hair quickly says,
"No ma'am, sorry"

"Alright, as I was trying to say... I'm selling you to One Direction."
****
I felt my whole world start spin, my stomach feeling queasy.

"Wh-what do you mean sell me?" I stuttered my eyes welling up with tears.

My mother scoffs, "Have to pay the bills somehow don't I."

"But what about Max? Where is he going?"

"What about him? You're the useless one," she spits, her eyes clouded with disgust.

Zayn, easily the prettiest one, looks at me, his soft, caramel brown orbs full of sympathy. I turn away from him and run up the stairs, slamming the door of my attic, my despair quickly turning to anger. I yank my mangy black duffel bag out from under my twin-sized bed. Hot tears still streaming down my face I open my drawers and throw everything I own, which isn't much, into the slightly torn bag. I grab my drugstore brand makeup off of my small desk and toss it into the pocket of the bag, zipping and throwing the bag over my shoulder as I open the attic trapdoor and head back downstairs.

As I slowly climb down the abrupt stairs I see Louis (Louie? Lewis? Not sure) peek around the corner of the stairwell and look at me. He quickly turns away, and I continue walking. I reach the bottom of the stairs all to quickly and try to compose myself. I step out into the living room and look around for I guess what is the last time.

I look at my mother with tears still in my eyes, "Can you at least call father and so I can say goodbye for one last time?" My father and I don't really talk much, but I still love him, and as much as I would like to deny it, I still love my mother. More than she ever loves or loved me I suppose.

"No. I already discussed it with him. Now get out," she grabs my frail wrist, I let out a small whimper as she shoves me out the door, they follow closely behind, clearly relieved to get out of the house.
