"No, I'll be fine"
You huffed out in annoyance, furiously typing away at your phone screen. Your eyes moving swiftly across the glass as you maneuvered the digital character side to side, watching it dodge and weave several obstacles.
"I just wanna make sure you aren't forgetting anything." The older woman said, swiping the edges of her mouth from any small smudges of the ruby red taint. "I won't be able to go back to the house until later."
A dark tone rang from your phone, the words 'you died' ran across the screen, taunting you. Letting a sigh fall from your lips, you slipped your phone into the pocket of your pleated skirt. "I double-checked everything last night."
Turning the steering wheel, your mother kissed her teeth and nodded. "Okay, good."
You reached over and fiddled with the dials on the radio, you stopped when you heard a familiar song playing. You hummed in delight, quietly singing along to the song, your mother glanced at you from her seat next to you, quietly observing you.
"You sure you're gonna be okay?"
This time you could hear the hesitation in her voice, you peeked at her from your peripheral vision, seeing how she glanced at you.
She was worried.
"Yeah," you exhaled slowly, then turned the volume up on the radio. "I'm just trying not to think about it."
She nodded, turning her attention back on the road as the two of you fell into a comfortable silence.
You were currently on your way to school, usually, you would walk but your mother decided to drop you off as it was a special occasion today.
The sport's festival.
Your family, especially your grandparents, took a lot of pride in this event as they were both Yuuei alumni and retired Pro-heroes.
Falcon and Nyx, a dynamic duo known for saving thousands of lives during the Great Kantō earthquake, one of the most famous heroes to come from Japan who worked in disaster relief systems all over the world.
Though they no longer worked on the front lines, they still lead and managed these teams.
Because the entire event was going to be televised, you knew they were going to be watching, along with the whole of Japan. As their only granddaughter and prominent heir to both of their quirks, they often bragged and showed off about you as their 'Last Standing Legacy'.
Although you always thought they were simply exaggerating your capabilities as a hero, which you had no desire to be.
"Just don't stress yourself too much," Your mother spoke, bringing you out of your train of thought as she turned a corner, the school building coming into view. "Your father and I are proud of you, regardless of what happens today."
The vehicle stopped by the curb, in front of the school gate. You noticed a familiar head of unruly purple hair waiting for you a few feet away.
The older turned to face you, her hands cradling your face as she brought your forehead to her lips, "Just try to have fun, sweetie."
You leaned back in your seat and looked at the pulled-down car mirror, luckily the lipstick hadn't rubbed off onto your forehead. You chuckled and opened the car door, "Yes, momma."
Shinsou spotted your mom's car and began walking toward it as you opened the boot of the car to retrieve your bags.
"Remember, I won't be able to pick you up so you're going to have to walk home." She yelled from the front seat, as Shinsou came to stand next to you, he patted your head as a greeting.
"Morning, Mrs [Your last name]"
"Morning dear, are you also playing in the festival today?" Your mother inquired as he took the heavy bags out of your hands.
"Yes, ma'am."
"Well, you two have fun. Make sure she stays out of trouble Shinsou." She teasingly warned as you closed the boot. You rolled your eyes with a smile and pushed the taller boy's back towards the school building.
"Bye, mom!"
"Bye Mrs [Your last name]," replied Shinsou, chuckling as you two walked across the quad, "You sure are eager today."
"I just want to get this over with," you mumbled as you unconsciously pouted your lips with your arms crossed across your chest. Shinso was about to comment until you shook your head and rolled your shoulders, trying to shake the nerves off.
"Anyways," you turned to the purple-haired boy, your pearly whites smiling up at him as you put more pep in your step. "Ready to show the heroes what we're made of?"
Deciding to push aside your earlier state. Shinsou made a mental note to ask about it later, instead, he replied with another chuckle, "Yeah, let's do it."
And with that the two of you began the day, that would inherently change everything.
