I hugged the toilet bowl as I laid my cheek against the cold ceramic surface; letting my stomach settle before getting up. Morning sickness started a few weeks ago and it's definitely here with a vengeance, I couldn't keep anything down at all; especially in the morning. With a tired huff, I flushed the toilet and got up; I turned the shower on and let it warm as I brushed my teeth at the sink and drank some water. After a quick shower, I wrapped my long strawberry blonde hair into a towel and got dressed. I threw on a pair of black dress pants, a rose gold short sleeve blouse and some matching heels then blow dried my hair and threw it into a high ponytail before putting on minimal makeup to cover my slightly pale face and hide the dark bags under my green eyes.
Checking the time I quickly I grabbed my purse and ran out the door of my bachelor apartment, locking it behind me. I caught the bus and pulled out the paperwork for my new job; the hiring agency placed me at Sterling Enterprises, as an office assistant at their headquarters. Sterling Enterprises is currently the biggest architecture company in the world. Lost in thought, the thirty minute bus ride flew by and before I knew it I was walking up the stone steps that lead up to the entrance to the skyscraper that was well known as Sterling Enterprises headquarters. Walking through the glass doors and passing security with my new Sterling ID, I walked up to reception for directions.
"Excuse me, I'm new here." I mumbled. "I'm supposed to meet Annie at 8am." I passed my letter to the receptionist who looked like she would rather be doing anything then give me the time of day. The receptionist stopped typing at her computer and quickly looked at the letter I held up.
"Head to the elevators and push the top floor button. Once to the top, walk to the end of the hallway and you'll meet Annie at the desk." She directed in a bored tone, going back to her work.
"Thank you so much, have a great day."
I quickly made my way to the elevators, thankful they didn't seem to busy; I made it in and straight to the top floor. With a soft ding the doors opened and I stepped out onto the marbled floor. The white walls and bright lights making the room feel bigger. Straight ahead of me was a hallway so I made my way down it, the only noise the clicking of my heels on the marble floor. As I got closer to the end of the hallway I could see a mahogany desk with an older grey haired lady sitting at it sorting papers, humming to herself. Once I got up to the desk she looked up with a bright warm smile. "Hello, how can I help you dear?"
"Hello, my name is Josephine. I was sent here from the hiring agency to meet Annie at 8am". I said, giving a shy smile.
"Oh yes! you're ten minutes early, I love a girl with punctuality. Welcome to Sterling Enterprises. I'm Annie, I'll be training you." Annie jumped up and before I knew it I was being welcomed into a warm embrace. "Come set your stuff down, this is where we man the fort so to speak." Annie walked me around the desk, pointing everything out. "This is your computer, and mines right here. If you look right over here we have each a space we can lock our personal items in, if you want to put away your purse I can give you a quick tour of the floor before the boss gets in."
"That sounds great Annie!" I quickly locked up my purse and followed my mentor as she made her way through a pair of wooden doors towards the left of the desk. On the other side of the doors the space was broken up into rooms by glass walls with blinds on them for privacy.
"So Josephine, as you can see on our right hand side is the boss' personal assistant's office; most times we deal with her, I hope God granted you the patience of a saint because she is one lazy ass woman who I think is just here to try and get close to the boss, I end up doing most her work." Annie rolled her eyes as she talked. " Through this office you can get to the boss's office, or there's a door straight back; only him and his PA have the keys to his office. Towards this way on the left we have two conference rooms for meetings and then a small kitchenette to make it easier to get drinks and snacks for meetings; a job that Mr. Sterling's assistant is supposed to do yet it's one I'm usually stuck with again. There's also a table in there if you'd like to eat lunch up here rather than go out. We also have a few smaller meeting rooms as well as a guest washroom up here."
