A Story Behind the Mirror

When I was in the mall, a store full of mirrors caught my attention. There was an old woman looking in the mirror. As I enter the store I can see the sadness in her eyes reflecting in the mirror.

"Ma'am why do you look so sad?" I ask her out of curiosity

"Every time I look in the mirror, I remember my mistakes I had in the past." she still look in the mirror then she look at me

"You remind me of myself when I was in your age. Do you want to know my story?" she ask me and I just nod as my answer. She flip the sign close in her store so that no one can disturb us.

We sit on the couch and she give me the camera to look some pictures of her. She start her story when she was a 20 years old college student. She likes to write in every mirror she sees, most of her friends called her 'A woman writing in the mirror.'

"Whenever I'm in front of the mirror, I can see my feelings reflecting on it. Is it weird?" she ask me all of the sudden

"No, it isn't weird. I can't put in words well but a mirror is like looking the other half of me." As I said that she just stared at me with wonder.

"You're just exactly like me!" she said happily as I was looking her old pictures, there was a young man with her in the picture.

"Ma'am who is this man with you in the picture?" I showed her the picture

"It brings back memories." she stared at the picture while a black cat entered and sit beside her

"This is the man who stole my heart. His name is Sam." She told me that they met in a funny situation. She used to work in a family restaurant as a waitress. She accidentally spilled water on Sam. She remember his priceless face and laugh at him, Sam's friends who's with him laugh as well which makes him get angry at her.

"I apologize to him but he still asks me for compensation. He's such a jerk at that time." I laugh when she said that Sam was a jerk. Coming from the mouth of an old woman, no offense but it's like she's travel back in her past.

"So, what did he said you do as a compensation for spilling water on him?" I tease her like we're just friends. She hesitate to answer my question at first but she told me anyway.

"He said that I will be his personal waitress for two weeks as a compensation."

"Really?! His personal waitress?! " I exclaim and she just shrug. I though it only exist in the movie but it really happens in the real life. She said Sam came every day in her work place, he always sat near the window and he just call her if he need anything. One day while she was cleaning one of the table in the restaurant, she keep staring at him and didn't notice that there was a young man walking towards her carrying a lot of papers.

She bump him and she stumble on the floor but Sam has been able to catch her. As the scattered papers falls onto them so is her heart. She wrote what she feels every single time she see Sam in the mirror in someplace hidden.

"As the days passed by I get to know more about him and I really fall for him. The last day of being his personal waitress are coming to an end but he suddenly ask me out on a date." Is their love story going to have a sad ending I ask myself and waiting for her to continue.

"I was happy when he asked me out so I decided to confess to him on that day but I was also surprised."

"So, where did he take you on a date?" I ask excitedly and she just smile while thinking about it.

It turns out that their first date is somewhere special to her. She wants me to guess but I think I might know the answer. Sam accidentally saw her the months ago while he was driving in his car. The place where she wrote all about her life and her feelings for Sam.

I fall in love with Sam. He read those words to her and he confess his feelings towards her before she confess to him. Then, they became lovers for 4 years and she still writes every mirror in their house.

"After 4 years, he proposed to me and the day of my wedding came at last. The day I made a big mistake that I would regret for the rest of my life." From the tone on her voice, she still regrets it until this day

"If you can't continue---"I stop when she holds my hand tightly

"When I saw you today, I decided to share my story to you." As she holds my hands she continue to tell her painful past. On the day of her wedding, she said it supposed to be a perfect day. A day where they says their vow to each other witness by God, their family and friends.

"I remember that day where I wear my wedding dress and when the door on the church open. I saw people who are part of my life. In the aisle there was a lit candle guiding me to him, I saw how excited he is. I cried as the fear that swallowing me inside. The fear where he will left me someday like what happen to my parents." Her tears falls in her eyes. She was a bride running away from her wedding.

"I really love him but I'm not ready at that time. He chase after me but I was long gone. I leave a message to him in the mirror but he still calls me and text me every day but I ignore it all. I move out and travel far away from him. I even change my cellphone number so he can't contact me anymore. I buried my past and this is the place where I start my new life. That's where my story end." She lets go of my hands, I cried and hug the pillow lies beside me.

"It was the best story I heard, thank you ma'am for sharing it with me." I smile at her as we shake our hands

"Just call me Ruby and thank you for listening to my story."

"I'm Danica and I will share your story to other people, Ruby." I hug her

"I see you got a guest." old men interrupt us.

"Yes, her name is Danica. We become friends just now. Danica meet my husband." She introduce me to her husband. He's a tall, handsome and kind gentleman, they are a perfect match to each other. I hope I will be able to meet Sam someday.

"Hi Danica! I'm Ruby's husband, Sam."

"What?! You're Sam?!" I was shocked when I hear his name and I look at Ruby with full of question

"Oh dear, I forgot to tell you." She's forgetful. I thought the ending of their love story was sad, I cried just a moment ago

"It's true that I buried my past and start a new life here but after 3 years, we found each other again." She holds her husband's hand

"More like I search for you everywhere and found you at last. I court her many time even she rejects me. I can't give up on her." Sam is a sweet guy and when Ruby walks away from their wedding, he still chasing after and he finally caught her now.

"Here's a gift for Danica as a souvenir and you're always welcome to visit us anytime." She gave me a mirror with their story written in it and a necklace with pictures inside.

"It's was a pleasure meeting you two and hear your story. So, I'll be on my way. Bye Ruby, Sam" I bid them goodbye

As I walk out the store, I realize a mirror is not only use to look when we make ourselves beautiful or do our make-ups. A mirror tells a story and reflect our feeling. Like the love story of Ruby and Sam. A story behind the mirror.
