You had always believed him.
When he said that he had to work late, you bought the lie. When he came home with his hair and suit messed up, he said it was because he ran into someone on his way home. When he said that Alexander needed help at his school in the middle of the day when he had a day off, you accepted it. You didn't let it bother you when he came late day after day and sometimes claimed to sleep at his office. He was the president and it made sense. Now you knew, why he lied all those times. That was why you were sitting there by the fireplace, with all the letters he wrote you when you were young and naïve. You heard the door open and close.
I saved every letter you wrote me From the moment I saw you I knew you were mine You said you were mine I thought you were mine
He wrote you letters when he was serving. You met him at a ball and it was love at first sight and least that is what you thought it was. Your tears brimmed at your eyes and you sung to the love of your life and it was obvious that you weren't the love of his life.
Do you know what Isaac said
When I told her what you'd done?
He said
"You have married an Icarus
He has flown too close to the sun"Isaac was your brother. He was the one to introduce you to Washington after your father joined the revolution. Isaac actually forced you to go to the ball where you would meet him. You would rather be at home lost in a book with no conflict or embarrassment but he forced you and you have never been mad at him for doing so.
Don't
Take another step in my direction
I can't be trusted around you
Don't think you can talk your way
Into my arms, into my armsYou stood up and faced him. He was about to lay his hand on your shoulder. You shook him off and turned around. He had done things like this before. One time you two were at a party when you were still courting, he had too much to drink and you caught him making out with Martha Dandridge. He apologized the next morning when you confronted him and you had trusted him to not do something like that again.
I'm burning the letters you wrote me
You can stand over there if you want
I don't know who you are
I have so much to learnYou looked at the fireplace where the carpet had caught your onslaught of tears. Slowly you took the box that you had been going through and dumped it in the fire. It blazed on and on, being there for you when your husband obviously wasn't. You were mad at him but ashamed at yourself for believing that the most famous man in the country would stay loyal to you.
I'm re-reading your letters
And watching them burn (burn)
I'm watching them burn (burn)
You published the letters she wrote to you
You told the whole world
How you brought this girl into our bed
In clearing your name, you have ruined our livesIt was the worst part when you had been out in the market with Alex who was talking animatedly about a book that he wanted to get. You had just purchased it for him when the lady who ran the stand gave you a pitiful look and handed you a pamphlet "The Dandridge Pamphlet". You were caught up in the fray as other started circling you. Your dress swirled around and Alex's hand gripped yours tight. You picked up the seven year old as you read the pamphlet that broke your heart. Balls of paper were thrown at you all with the same information, your husband publicly stated that he no longer loved you.
Heaven forbid someone whisper
"He's part of some scheme"
Your enemy whispers
So you have to scream
I know about whispers
I see how you look at my sisterHe had a lot of enemies most of whom supported the British. Charles Lee had made it his mission to ruin his life since he was shot by one of those loyal to George. He privately accused him of stealing money from the country but to you he did much worse he stole your heart and had the audacity to break it like glass. Your sister was a disabled person whose left leg was paralyzed. You had seen how he glared at her when she was visiting with her husband who had no problem with her issue. But somehow George did. You tried to shake it off but you couldn't help but feel it was because of press.
Don't
I'm not naïve
I have seen women around you
Don't think I don't see how they fall for your charms
All your charmsWhen you and George had gone on tours around the Northern states, you had seen how the women fell for him. How they blushed and gossiped. They didn't spare a glance towards you and if they did, it was a glare. They hated how you were in the way to get the man of their dreams and become the first lady. You had stayed away from the public view and shielded Alex from criticism. You were mostly found in libraries or staying home. The slaves that George had previously owned were the only ones who supported you. You had helped them sneak out when you had thought George was working over time at night. That is why there were few left and they all had an admiration for you.
I'm erasing myself from the narrative
Let future historians wonder how Y/N reacted
When you broke her heart
You have thrown it all away
Stand back, watch it burn
Just watch it all burnYou threatened him, as the fire illuminated your figure. You weren't coming back. Alex's bags were packed upstairs and so were yours. The last slave to serve you, Kaylie, was ready to go and leave with you. You payed her money and gave her freedoms that most would find outrageous, maybe that is why the media hated you so much. But you weren't going to stand and watch as everything was torn apart. That box that ignited the flames in the fireplace and in your heart had all the pictures. All that was left of any memory of you was in George's mind and that was enough for you. You were leaving to stay with Isaac.
And when the time comes
Explain to the children
The pain and embarrassment
You put their mother through
When will you learn
That they are your legacy?
We are your legacy
If you thought you were mine (mine, mine, mine)
Don'tYou emphasized the word children and George's mouth opened in shock as his eyes moved down to your belly. You were expecting a child that would have the genes of George but never have the displeasure of meeting him. You were leaving and were never coming back. Not after everything would you sit idly by and pretend that it didn't break you when it occurred. You were finally going to stand up and say that this was not going to be brushed over and that George is free to have Martha as long as they both shall live.
