Regulus Arcturus Black is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated Harry Potter characters.

Just for the sake of this character essay I googled 'Harry Potter underrated characters' to see if he gets mentioned and I was deeply disappointed. I think I saw his name pop up twice. Hedwig gets mentioned in almost every list, while Regulus is almost completely left out.
Everybody remembers the famous letter Harry found in the fake Horcrux, but almost nobody knows who R.A.B actually is. When I tell people that Regulus is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting characters in the Harry Potter series, I am normally met with confused looks, followed by the question 'Who?' and in all honesty, that question always makes me sad. Everybody goes on and on about how Severus Snape was the bravest man because he was a Death Eater, who realized he made a mistake and risked his life defying Voldemort. Well, Regulus Black was a Death Eater, who realized he made a mistake and gave his life to defy Voldemort.
And he should get more recognition for that!

What makes Regulus so interesting is the fact that we know so little about him. All we know is that he was Sirius' brother, who followed the family beliefs, became a Death Eater and that he died trying to destroy one of Voldemort's Horcruxes. I wish J. K. Rowling would have given us more information; perhaps a proper flashback instead of Kreacher's story, or perhaps Sirius could have told us more about him.
So, I decided to gather as much information I could possibly find and tell you his story, what makes him a hero and what makes him one of the most tragic characters in the Harry Potter series.
REGULUS BLACK: THE UNSUNG HERO
THE STORY OF REGULUS BLACK
Childhood
Regulus Arcturus Black was born in the year 1961 to parents Walburga and Orion Black. He was a member of the noble House of Black - one of the most old pureblood wizarding families, that was part of Salazar Slytherin's sacred twenty-eight.
He had an older brother, Sirius, who was against his family's beliefs of Pureblood Superiority and eventually got himself disowned. Regulus on the other hand was proud to be part of the Black family. He was sorted into Slytherin and had the same beliefs as his family. He decorated his room in Slytherin colours and had the Black family crest and it's motto painted over his bed. He also had newspaper cuttings about Voldemort stuck together on the wall of his room.
