He closed his eyes, face haloed in the dusty light. He said, "I waited, you know. For the one who never came."

Silence.

"The hero...what exactly does he do after he defeats the dragon if he can't save the maiden? And what for––why exactly is it that we must suffer for everyone else's mistakes?" His eyes snapped open, and they were lit blue and gold. They had taken everything away from him. He would take it all back, even if he had to destroy the world in the process.

They owed him this much, but his audience was silent, still so painfully silent. 

She kneeled on the ground, motionless, godless. Her expression remained blank, even as a glass shard twenty inches long shattered at her feet. A second fell soon after the first, this time on her arm. 

The skin split. Blood gushed out of the wound. It hurt, but it didn’t matter, not this time. He’d asked why she bothered asking him for help, when there was so little for him to gain. His smile had been taunting, and her confidence faltered at the memory. But she’d had no answer, then. 

She had one now.
