My alarm clock chirps at the break of dawn waking me up for yet another miserable day. I try to drown out the sound by using my pillow to cover my ears, however my mother comes in and rips my pillow from my grasp.
"Let's go Gin, I will not have you be late for your first day of school," she paces around the room turning off my alarm clock. She walks to my light switch and turns on the lights and pulls back the shade from my window to let the faint light of sunlight brighten up my dark room. I groan as I roll around in my bed shielding my eyes. My mother walks back towards my bed and then rips the covers from my body, "Let's go Ginevera. Don't make me get your father" she says sternly. Those words immediately make my body wake up. I sit groggily on the edge of my bed as my dog, Enzo, sleeps soundly in his bed next to mine.
I felt like a zombie walking to my vanity as I pick up my brush. I roughly brush through my hair as my mother continues to pace around my room, looking for the slightest imperfection to tidy up. I learned her bad habit at a young age, so my room never has an item out of place. "Your lunch is in the foyer, do not forget to grab it on your way out. Your father nor I will be around today we have an important guest arriving today and our attention will be solely on them. Am I understood?"
"Yes ma'am" I practically yawn and she leaves my room without another word. I section the top of my ginger hair together and I tie it off with a black ribbon. I lightly apply some mascara and stand at the entrance of my closet. I tiredly rummage my hanged clothes and pull out a cream-colored turtleneck shirt and a mini black skirt from my drawers. I tuck my shirt into my skirt and then grab a matching cream cardigan to layer on top. The weather in September is so weird and inconsistent, hence why autumn is my least favorite season. I wander into my bathroom to brush my teeth and I nearly trample on Enzo as he has finally awakened. I quickly grab my black rubber booties, my phone and bookbag from my room as Enzo and I walk downstairs to the kitchen.
The house is so annoyingly quiet. I can quite literally hear a pin fall if I were to drop one. I sit at the end of the last stair and slip on my boots, while Enzo barks at the neighborhood ladies taking their morning stroll. "Enzo quit it" I sneer. He does the same shit every morning, it's not like the neighborhood ladies can harm me, they wouldn't even make it past the gates to the driveway. Enzo quiets down and walks to the kitchen with his head on alert towards the windows. Enzo was a gift to me from my parents when I was 14. He was trained to be my guard dog for when I am left home alone so I have some protection, however sometimes he's just annoying. I follow behind him to the kitchen. I pour a bowl of cereal and some coffee and sit at the chair next to where Enzo was laying. I pull out my phone to read any of the latest news and text my friends Marinette and Alya in our group chat. I hadn't even noticed that they were blowing up my damn phone. I scroll through the missed 67 messages and all I had perceived from it was that there's going to be a new boy in school and that Alya has the hots for Nico again.
"I'll see you in school Alya then we can discuss Nico, Marinette are you on our way over?"
Marinette didn't even let a second pass and she had already responded.
"Yeah, I'm pulling out of my development now, I'll be over there in 8 minutes."
I read Marinette's message and put down my phone as I inhale my breakfast. I toss Enzo a quick biscuit or two before I hear Marinette's car pull down my driveway. "Alright Enzo, behave yourself" I say before I lock the door behind me. He watches me through the side windows on the door until I am in Marinette's car. Marinette is wearing her signature first day of school outfit. She hugs me and as I buckle in the front seat and tosses my bookbag into her backseat.
"First day of senior year!" she squeals excitedly. Sometimes her happiness is too much in the mornings to bear with, however she quickly brightens my mood. She turns up the volume on her car radio as she begins to scream the song lyrics as she drives out of my driveway. Each and every morning from the moment we both got our cars; we have our own American Idol to mentally prepare ourselves for the school day.
