Jungkook"Kook, hurry up. We've been out here too long," Deshaun hisses, brown eyes scanning the perimeter. "The cops could show up at any time."
I adjust my mask and continue to press down the canister's nozzle. "I got this, Richards. You know we have to do this. Nobody wants to spend the tax dollars to clean up all this offensive graffiti, so I'm doing it myself."
"Uh huh, very noble. Now hurry up. You're supposed to be starting police academy. You can't be caught doing this illegal shit."
My nose scrunches up under my mask. "I don't see why I'm expected to follow in his footsteps. My brother doesn't."
Deshaun rolls his eyes and taps his fingers on his thigh. "Well, he's studying to become a doctor, which also looks good. Gotta keep the image up for your dad. He is the mayor."
"Yeah, yeah. I bet he wants me to run when I'm his age after being a good police officer." I place the spray paint back in my bag and we set off on foot. "I understand that it's a noble profession and all, but it doesn't sit right with me."
My friend's face contorts. "I wouldn't necessarily call it the most noble of professions. I prefer firefighters."
"DJ, not all cops are bad. It's just a few bad apples."
"You know, in some professions, I don't think having 'a few bad apples' should fly. Firefighters aren't like 'oh, we put out fires, but a few bad apples are arsonists who set populated buildings on fire. Please bear with us. Red lives matter.'"
I glare at him. "You're really fucked up, you know."
He raises his hands up in surrender. "I'm just saying that those Street Pirates do more good than the police."
I pause and turn to look at him. "Excuse me? Did you just fucking say a gang does more good for this city than the fucking police?"
"Yeah, I am. Because they target corrupt cops, politicians, and the rich."
"They kill people!"
"So do the police! They're vigilantes. Like Oliver Queen. Especially Robinhood, the face of the group. He's like Oliver Queen, going around and putting a bullet between people's eyes like 'you've failed this city.'"
I cross my arms. "He's a fucking criminal like them. A damn thug. He doesn't get to play judge, jury, and executioner."
Deshaun chuckles. "They only go after the untouchables. And unlike the police, they don't pretend to be better than the criminals they put down. They don't have a shield that keeps them safe from the law."
"You can't trust anyone who works in the shadows like that, Deshaun."
"I'd take Batman over a cop anyday."
"That's a work of fiction. This is real life, DJ."
"If being a cop is so great, then why have you been putting off enrolling in the academy so long?" His brown eyes narrow. "Tell me why. You could've started when you were eighteen. But instead, you came up with some deal with your old man about starting by the time you're twenty-one."
My eye twitches. "You can't join the force until you're twenty-one anyway. Cops are good. I just don't think I'm good enough to be one. It's dangerous. I don't know if I have it in me to sacrifice."
Deshaun scoffs. "Whatever, man. Think what you want. Hopefully one day, you'll see that people are people. Cops aren't any more special than the rest of us. But if you wanna do what your old man wants and actually join when your heart isn't even in it, be my guest. Just don't say I didn't warn ya."
He closes the door to his beat-up car with a huff, driving off without another word.
Scoffing, I put my bike helmet on and get on my motorcycle.
What a fucking child. It must be nice to be so oblivious to the real world.
Author's Note: If you couldn't tell by the warnings and the content of the prologue, this story isn't for everyone. Just a disclaimer though: I don't believe just going around and killing people. That should be a given. Like Arrow and other shows and content with vigilantes, this work is pure fiction. I do not condone playing Kira and killing people off. Anyway, if you're sticking around, I hope you enjoy this story! Updates may be slow because I have a lot of stories going on, but I hope you bear with me!
What do you think of the story so far? Any thoughts on what might happen?
Make sure to take care and love yourself as best as you can.
With lots of love,
