I wake up to a blurry scene of gold and beige. My body is warm. Rubbing the sleep out of my eyes brings everything into focus. Between my strands of hair, I see Rahlan looking down at me. My chest is resting on top of his, half on him and half on the bed. His toasty arm is wrapped around my frame, holding me close.
With his free hand, he brushes my locks behind my ear. With nothing between us, my gaze meets his. There's a smile on the corner of his lips, small enough that it could easily be overlooked. He's pleased.
His red eyes fall below my chin. My gaze follows his – down the hard ridges of his chest to mine, and it dawns on me that we're both completely bare. He has quite a view of me. My cheeks go pink, and I lie my head down flat on his chest, hiding myself.
I've slept in his arms plenty of times, but this is the first time that my body is resting against his with nothing in between. He did see me last night, but the light was dim, and I was wrapped up in the heat of the moment. Now that the room is lit with bright morning sunlight, I'm feeling shy, and I wish that I'd gotten dressed before falling asleep.
A cool breeze passes over my back. Turning my head, I glance up at him. He's lifted the blanket, and he's looking over me with that same pleased expression. He's looking at my naked butt.
"Rahlan," I growl. My body snaps away from him, taking the blanket with me. I sit up with it wrapped around me like a towel and meet his gaze with a glare. "You know I'm shy."
With the blanket around me, he's exposed, but he doesn't seem to care. He's probably proud of his perfect vampire body.
"I was admiring my beautiful human," he says. "You did not have any reservations last night."
I avert my eyes. "It was dark last night."
"Surely you are aware that vampires have excellent night vision?"
I meet his gaze again. His lips are pressed back, like he is doing his best to hold in his laughter. "Yes. I know."
"Did it not matter last night?"
I look down at the sheets. "You distracted me."
He chuckles, and I pull the blanket up to my cheeks.
His hands snap to my middle, and I'm lifted into the air. I squeal as he drops me back onto the bed, laying me flat on the mattress.
He climbs over me and meets my lips with a kiss. My sudden fright disappears, and my chest grows warm. My life has been turned upside down. My old home is gone, along with everyone I've ever known. I live in a castle with vampires, in a land where humans are now considered slaves. Despite all of that, there is one person who sleeps with their arms around me, one person who would trudge through forests to find me, one person who adores me, who values me, who loves me, who can't get enough of me and makes me feel like the most important woman in the world. When he kisses me, I feel wanted, and everything else melts away.
He breaks the kiss, leaving me panting for breath. That same pleased look is on his face. I can only imagine what I look like now with my mouth hanging open.
He pushes himself up and gets off the bed. In a daze, my eyes follow him around the room. Suddenly realizing that I shouldn't stare while he's undressed, I look down. The sight of myself makes me jump. The blanket that was covering me has fallen down to my belly button. I quickly pull it up again and grab my dress and underwear at the end of the bed. When he kisses me, all I want is to be with him, and any concern for my appearance falls to the back of my mind.
We both get dressed at the same time, each focused on our own clothing. I put on the same white sleeveless dress from yesterday. It has beautiful frills around the collar, and I want to wear it again. With all the clothes that Jaclyn and I have between us, she won't mind if I keep the dress for an extra day.
