Chapter One

At first it's just sounds. Like grinding of metal against stone. Like whining of a spring.

Then I open my eyes. It's dark but I can make out the outlines of the room I'm in. But it's not a room. It's a box. And it's moving upward.

It feels like forever. My head is buzzing with questions. What? Where? How? Why?

Who am I?

I remember that much - my name is Sasha. I remember it was short for something but I don't remember what. I don't remember where I came from. I don't remember how my voice sounds. Or how I look.

Distracted by these thoughts, I don't realise that the box has stopped moving until the two panels on the ceiling are opened and I'm blinded by the light. I put my hand above my eyes to shield them and manage to see the four tall silhouettes that are standing above me. I quickly move back, scared of these strange people. One of them jumps in the box and lands right in front of me.

"Another one" he says examining me. He has short blond hair and curious eyebrows. "Shanks, it's another girl." he says, now looking at the others.

My eyes, having adjusted to the light, now notice that the silhouettes belong to boys and that there are not just four, but ten and more are all gathered behind them, trying to peek in the box.

The boy with the curious eyebrows tries to grab me by the shoulders but I move away and evade him. I get to the wall of the box, jump and cling to the edge of it. Focusing all my strength and will I pull myself out.

Then I start running.

Two seconds later I am pushed to the ground and feel the weight of someone much heavier than me crush me and pin me to the ground. Then I heard a voice in my ear.

"Calm down, okay. No one's gonna hurt you, you have my word." His accent sounds strange and at the same time oddly familiar.

''What good is your word for!?" I spit and realise I sound like him.

He lets me go and pulls me to my feet. I don't miss a beat, I grab him by the collar of his shirt and smack him against a tree.

"What is this place? Who are you? Why am I here?" I scream and thug on his shirt.

He doesn't flinch. Something tells me he's seen that before. If not worse.

"Let me go." he says calmly "You'll get your questions answered."

Only now do I take in his face. It's a beautiful face - blond hair, dark eyes, square jaw, pale complexion. Even with no memories in my head I know that this beauty is rare.

I let him go.

"Name's Newt." he says in that strange accent that we share

Strange name I think

But "Sasha" is all I mumble.

I look around and find everyone staring at me. I boy with dark skin makes his way to me and by the way everyone steps away and lets him pass, I assume that he has some authority.

"I'm Alby, welcome to the Glade, Greenie. " he doesn't speak the same way Newt does "Never, ever leave the Glade. Everything else you'll find out tomorrow." he begins to leave but he turns around and adds.

"And trust me, you'll make your life here much more easier if you never do anything like that again." he points at Newt.  "Good that?" I just glare at him.

"It's okay, Alby." says Newt and Alby leaves.

"Come, let's get you some food from Frypan and find you a place to sleep." Newt says and takes a few steps. When he turns and sees that I haven't moved an inch, he comes back and tries to grab me by the arm. I snatch it away.

"Please come, there really isn't anything you can do right now."

"I don't remember anything." I say more to myself.

"I know, it's like that with all of us." I look up to him and see the concerned look on his face and realise that he really wants to help.

"How do I look like?" I ask him. I can't stand being faceless. I can't stand being nothing but a name.

"Stunning." he says and that answer startles me. When his cheeks turn bright red, I realise that it had startled him too. I look away before he sees me blushing

"I mean blue eyes, dark red hair, fair skin." he puts his hand above my head and drags it in a straight line towards himself. It lands right on his chest.

"About 5ft6." he adds.

"Okay, good to know." I say and feel beyond awkward. When I catch myself staring at him, I redirect my gaze to the ground and add "Lead the way."

And he starts walking. So I follow him.

A/N This is the first chapter of my the Maze Runner fanfic and basically, it is another version of the ending of the first book, starting a little after Teresa's arrival. I thought that Newt should have been included more, given that fact that he is bloody awesome, so I came up with that :)
