"For a spilt second they stared at each other. A fleeting, lasting moment. One person noticing another person out of a whole crowd of strangers" - Alexandra Potter.

AUBREY'S (POV)

Damn!

I was so damn late!

I grabbed my coffee from Starbucks in one hand and ran towards college. My car was always clonking out. You would believe the my car would come in handy especially now, when I was late, but nope! The car refused to start. Thank goodness Seattle wasn't that big of a town. Thank God my college wasn't far away.

I held my books in one hand my coffee cup with another as I flew down the street. I could feel peoples eyes boring down on me as I sprinted. The attention that I got from everyone still seemed to surprise me and got me fidgety and nervous, even after twenty years. Was it my fault I was so damn gorgeous? When guys stared at me you would think they had never seen a girl in their lives before.

I had sleek black hair with red streaks, that bobbed down at my back in flimsy curls. My brown eyes were huge and it always looked like I was wearing fake eyelashes, when in reality, I had not one once of make up on. All the girls were so jealous of me that it was so damn hard to make friends. Urg! Life was so difficult sometimes.

If I was late today, Mr. Tanner would definitely be on my case. I couldn't afford any slip up. Not even one. I cursed silently as I felt my pants start to slip.

"Oh damn," I muttered silently as I kept sprinting down the pathway. If my pants slipped as I was running I would be definitely mortified. My eyes were completely trained on my converse sneakers that I didn't stop until I collided with someone.

That person was someone I would regret bumping into for my entire life. Because once our paths crossed, my life would change forever. I just didn't know it yet.

I glanced up as my coffee cup bumped right into someone's torso. Shit! I silently cursed as the coffee spilled right out and trickled down my arm, scorching every inch of my flaming skin in its wake. My skin started tingling where the coffee had burned. But no time to waste on that.

I glanced at the black shirt. The coffee had seeped into the shirt as well. Except the stranger made no reaction of ever acknowledging it. "Uh sorry," I started and was cut short when my eyes raked up his firm torso and landed on his face.

I gasped. He was gorgeous. Utterly gorgeous. Actually gorgeous was an understatement. With crystal green-blue eyes and and copper mattered hair and a smile so deadly, he was the form of perfection.

"Sorry," I mumbled again, staring straight at him. He was wearing all black, and in a way it suited him so well. I flushed and averted my eyes when I realized I was still gaping at him like a lunatic. "You can say something you know? Like maybe you could say 'its okay?'"

His eyes grazed me thoroughly. His lips were pressed into a thin line, and call me crazy but there was an almost deranged look in his eyes that made me shiver. He bent down until he could get access to my ear. I was frozen, rooted to the spot, unable to move as his breath tickled my earlobe. "Maybe it's not okay."

His voice sent shivers down my spine, and right then I knew he was dangerous. This was a man I did not want to cross paths with. And then why was I still rooted to the spot? Why was I still staring at his oh-so-perfect-features. He grinned, his eyes crinkling at the end. But it wasn't inviting, it was full of secrets. Full of darkness.

"Maybe I want to shout at you for being so careless," he said again. "Maybe I want to drag you away to someplace private and reach you a lesson you will never forget, for spilling your coffee on me. What can you do then?" His voice had dropped almost to a whisper, it sounded like a threat.

I glanced around cautiously. There was hardly anyone around although the cars sped by like nothing happened. I glanced up at the beautiful boy now trembling a bit. There was something about him, something deranged but at the same time completely mesmerizing.

"You wouldn't dare," I challenged, knowing it was completely stupid to do so. I should have just walked away right there, right then, but being the complete idiot I was, I didn't move.

"Oh, would I." He smirked and caught my arm in one swift motion. "With someone as gorgeous as you, Auburn Foster, I wouldn't think twice."

I gasped. "How do you know my name?" It wasn't remotely possible for him to know me.

Every cell in my body was screaming at me to back off but I stayed put, maybe it was because he spiked my interest and the dangerous grin on his face indicated exactly that.

He winked. "Oh, Auburn, I know more than just your name. Isn't Mr. Tanner going to be pissed if you turn up late? Shame! He would have me to blame for that."

My breath hitched. This guy was seriously starting to creep me out. Why couldn't I just hit him in the crotch and run? Oh yeah! Because I was too mesmerized to even move an inch.
The grin on his face grew even wider. "What happened?" He smirked. "Cat got your tongue?"

"How do you know me?" I breathed.

He just stood still, his composure stiff. "I know much more than that, Auburn," he whispered, brushing a finger on my cheek. "Mom is waiting eagerly at home for your verdict if you aced the exam or not? Isn't she?" That sentence caused my mouth to hang open slightly from shock. My result of my SAT's was out in a few days and of course my mom was eager.

"The whole town had their exams," I defended myself to him. "You can't prove anything by that." I swatted his arm away, angrily, but I couldn't deny that there was something strangely familiar about his touch. Just the way he knew exactly how to send shivers down my spine brought up blurred memories. Right then I knew we had bumped into each other before, but when? And why was his face a mystery to me?

He confirmed my thoughts by saying, "you would know me too, love. You just have to dig deeper."

Just as the last words came out from his mouth, I saw him reach inside his pocket and saw a glint of silver. I gasped. It was the hilt of a knife. His eyes bore holes into mine, never leaving contact as my breathing deepened and quickened. Surely he wouldn't pull the knife out right here?

"What are you going to do?" I croaked, my palms sweaty with fear.

"Exactly what you think I'm going to do," he said in his smug British tone. My heart pounded in my chest violently as he slipped the knife out of his pocket.

I stood there trembling. "Don't hurt me," I whimpered. He hadn't even touched me but I was still rooted on the spot. It was as if his eyes held powers that I couldn't even fathom.

"Then I'm going to give you two options, Auburn," he whispered, seductively.

"Stay or run."

I was surprised by his choice of an option, but I didn't think twice. I took off in the opposite direction, not caring if I was late for college or not. The only thing that kept replaying in my head as I ran was the fact that I couldn't believe I was just on the brink of death, and escaped long enough to tell the tale.
