Mimicing

  I look about my room over at my working jumpsuit, then I glance at the files on my screen. My parents were hard working people that were in a community of hard working people, I put my work jumpsuit on. Best I get out and get to work like my parents would have. I could see why Kamen really enjoyed staying with my parents.

I look at the clock and I only used up four hours of work time, so I just attempt to work harder to make up for the work I lost. I head out tot he Docking bay where the docking crew nod at me looking surprised to see me. I guess they were told I might not be working today. I spend a couple extra minutes double checking my power suit, and I head out of the docking bay and as I exit I hear Kamen over the private comm line. "Good to see ye out here boy, you do your parents proud by being out here after finding out about them." I raise my hand in the direction of where Kamen is, "thank you Sir. It was good to lean about them, and thank you for what you did for them."

I then fly over to the back of the slug and I look over it, I spy a good amount of green crystals. While I was told they aren't as higher worth as the ones the other guys were cutting I knew that they aren't common as we don't see much of the green crystal glass on the market. Most societies go have the old fashioned practice of glass blowing that uses sand to create glass items. However they are considered more expensive than the mined crystals as the blown glass is a specialty product made by few people. I had an idea and I contacted Canis on the comms.

"Hey Canis I have an idea. Matron Sheila loves her garden, how about we gift her a greenhouse for her growing projects?" I start cutting a crystal as I wait for him to answer and I get a surprising answer, "I think I know a few of the other former residents that would like to get in on that idea John. Let me do some poking about and I'll tell the guys to save out the best greens when they sort them and we can look over greenhouse plans and figure out how many we need." I agree with him and I take extra care with my cuttings of the crystals.

As I cut the crystals I notice something at the point where they connect to the slug. I contact Tersan, "Hey how do the new crystals on these things grow?" I keep cutting my next green when Tersan responds. "Well when they break off an old crystal the new one just grows in the same spot." I look over to what I was curious about, "they the same color when they grow out?" Tersan pauses and I see one of my lights move around till it sees the pure white small crystals I was curious about. Tersan then comments, "well then. This is an old space slug, those white crystals form as they grow, they are very rare as you almost never find them when they get this old Sir Kamen will come by with a small cutter so we can remove some of these. They are worth more than the large crystals, we didn't think we'd run into an old one as they tend to gather in one area till they die. By guess is this one is heading to the place they go to die."

From the bit I had read on these slugs from the info that Tersan had sent to me the slugs when they die calcify into new asteroids, usually very mineral rich ones. I finish cutting the crystal I am working on and attach it to my line as Kamen comes up with two precise laser cutters. I had been shown how they work and from what I had learned while I was working with them they are a very precise tool they are much easier to use than the standard mining laser. However they are more expensive to replace if they need repairs.

Kamen hands me one and says, "alright while on the large crystals you cut as close as possible. For these we only cut half the crystal. So you need to be more careful when you cut these, you don't have to be precise on the end cut, but it needs to be a straight as possible." I wave my hand so he knows I hear him and I take the cutter and I examine the crystals near where I and at. I find one that is fairly large for my first attempt. I wasn't sure how easy it would be to cut these considering how hard the crystals are harder to cut where they have faults in them.
