The next morning as I head into the docking bay one of the men who works there stops me before I head out. "Hey there John, I had a greenhouse maker contact me first thing to ask me to mark some crystals for you and seeing as how I was told you were to be rewarded some for the amount of work you've done I just wanted you know know that it's been taken care of." I nod my head knowing the man from the greenhouse maker said he would be arraigning for the transfer of the crystals.
I finish putting my gear on and head out to the space slug, the few days of work really did make it look better. From what I could see of how it moved in the vacuum it seemed to me more mobile as well. It was good to know that we could help one of the natural space faring organisms. I head to where I saw a large grouping of the smaller crystals before I headed in the previous day and Kamen contacts me on the intercom.
"Alright boy once everyone is in tonight we'll be heading out again. The cap'in wants us to get a move on and I agree. While this haul will make us some cash this isn't what we're out here for." I start cutting and Kamen continues, "nice idea for what you're going to do for Sheila. Even if she still is at the orphanage she doesn't do much more work there due to her age so that greenhouse will be wonderful for her. It'll also give her something to do."
I look around a moment trying to figure out where Kamen was, after giving up on that I respond. "I couldn't not do something for her, she had done so much for me. I think I had the best childhood I could have had because of her." I focus back on the job I was doing, I was curious if the slug was looking better because the work I've been doing of lately. After every five I cut I see the slug shake like a wave going down it's whole body.
I spend most of the daytime ship cycle cutting the small crystals, I notice the slug increasing it's shuddering and then Kamen waves everyone away and the slug flies away. Kamen chuckles over the actions of the slug, "well I've heard that when the slug is feeling very good after the 'trimming' they will try to shake the miners off. I had never gotten to see it before today, good work everyone."
We head back into the ship and the crew takes the three bags I filled off of my belt. Kamen pats my shoulder gently, "good work boy those will increase out payout for this side job. We don't normally deal with those smaller crystals because we can never cut them precisely enough."
I see Canis and wave at him who then walks over to me. "Well I guess we'll be heading back on course to that system we're going to be mining on." Kamen nods his head and beckons us over to a screen. "Here let me show you the system we're heading to," he turns on a diagram of a solar system. What we see on the screen is a system with a slightly larger than normal yellow dwarf star. It has a binary that is a small blue dwarf. I can see five planets in the system," so which one are we heading to?"
Kamen points his finger at the second planet, "the scans show that the old civilization was on this one. It also happens to be the world the humans are on. As this is one of the systems we no longer have records for we have no idea how long they have been there. We can tell that the group of humans on that world are peaceful, they're also very primitive. They use very primitive technology, not even having electricity. Even your people had some electricity John, these humans don't live near any of the planet's oceans. Which is odd seeing as how there is two satellites holding the oceans steady." Kamen then points to a small world with some large rings, "this one here the scientists think is in it's infancy. We could set up a colony and sell the starter colony off, there is enough water and soil that we could set up growing things and some basic wild life that we could transplant from the currently alive world in the system."
I hadn't know we could set up new world colonies, though I imagine the USA would be alright if you find a world with no definable life on it. That could be a fun project we could set up structures for the starting city then add in plant life as we worked on the second planet and if we observe the growth of the plants on the colony world we could determine the best time to add the animals. It could work well.
As me and Canis head out of the docking bay one of the guys from the previous night stops us, "hey John. I got contacted by SunnySide this morning, they have the greenhouse all planned out they're going to work with Raska to keep Matron Sheila busy while they set it up." I nod my thanks tot he man for keeping me informed. I was happy this was getting done and so many people wanted to help with it.
Canis pokes my back, "come on lets go and shower this sweat off us." Funny thing about Siriusaens is they sweat more than any of the other canine bipeds. It is amusing as while I don't have much experience in human knowledge, I was given some education in ancient human history. I had told Canis how one of the old human civilizations worshiped a biped canine like their people. I had run into a few as I grew up that would love that idea.
I was told very quietly by one of my trainers that back in the history of the universe the intergalactic association of worlds have 'lost' worlds many times over the ages, and that in the early times of the intergalactic community the species of the universe would go about and check on the more primitive species and see how they were progressing. However the civilization had to show they had reached some kind of point in their development for the galactic community to 'schedule' a visit.
I had been told over the years that humans had learned and lost more technologies than any other species in the universe. Some of which were only found on the old Earth, it seems that humans are an odd bunch of sentient life compared tot he rest of the universe.
