They didn't know why, but Y/N had a weird gut feeling that their day would be quite the questionable one.
That morning they woke up as usual and did their usual morning routine. Even though they lived alone in a rather small studio apartment, it was enough for them and as long as they were alone most of the time, they didn't care either. Their only visitor would be the mouse that they fed every now and then. It wasn't like they had anyone they cared about anyway. They were unable to really connect with anyone their entire life, the only reason being that they were quirkless. Being teased all your life for something you had no control over really does something to a person over time. They also despised the fact that many of their former classmates that bullied them actually became heroes themselves, they were various degrees of successful, though. Y/N always wondered how those people were able to become heroes when they used to relentlessly bully one "less fortunate" than them. That was what they always thought about heroes, just people who pretend to be better than everyone else simply for being born a certain way, they hated them.Sighing, they finished themselves up and left their apartment, their bag swinging off their shoulder. On their way to their job, they completely blocked out the rest of the world. Everything felt like a blur that was drowned out by the loud music blasting through their headphones. They always imagined how different their life could be as they walked, the scenario would always depend on the current song playing, but most of the time, they imagined themselves simply running away from their current life and starting a new, better one. Almost any other life seemed better than their current one, though.
Turns out, as they were walking, they were passively ignoring two men. Y/N simply didn't hear them and thus didn't notice the men catcalling them. That seemed to piss one of them off, who proceeded to push Y/N against a wall so that they had no choice but to pay attention to him. The man had blonde, messy hair and a black mask over his eyes. Out of the mans forehead seemed to poke out, what seemed to be, three bright red knife-like horns.
"Hey! Didn't you know it's rude to just ignore people?!" He had them trapped between his arms so that they had no way of getting way.
Y/N simply stared at his large purely white eyes and took their earbuds out of their ears. "What do you want? Attention?" Even though, they tried to seem calm and collected, it was clear that they were scared. They knew that that part of the city was dangerous, but they mostly just avoided being on the street at night, which sometimes wasn't even possible. Never would they have thought that they'd get harassed so early in the morning.
"Ah, cocky, too, aren't you? Can you believe it, Blue?" The man looked over and yelled at the other man, one with a blue bandana around his forehead, sunglasses and ridiculously long ears that almost reached his brown hair.
The second man, Blue, seemed rather annoyed with the other mans behavior, having his arms crossed and simply glaring at his partner. "Didn't I tell you to not get distracted, Red. We're here for a reason, harassing random people is not it."
"So, what?! Was I just supposed to let this one just pass us and miss out on-" Red got interrupted by a loud crash coming from the direction Y/N was heading to. All three of them turned their heads towards the noises and as soon as Y/N blinked, the men were running towards said noises.
Blue ran towards a truck where yet another man stood while Red ran towards a Pro hero with a random pipe he seemingly just found on the ground. Y/N wasn't just gonna stand there and watch the show, though. They ran in the opposite direction as fast as they could. As they did, they bumped their shoulder against yet another man. They simply stumbled and yelled a quick "I'm sorry" as they continued running.
They couldn't get a good look of the man as their eyes were fixed on what as ahead of them, but they still somehow felt his eyes pierce their soul as they ran. It's not like that stopped them anyway. They just ran until they ran out of breath.
Pressing themselves against a wall, they looked around and realized, "fuck..." They were lost. They never were in that part of the city, but it did seem kind of nice. Already done with their day, they pulled their phone out and called their manager. As soon as they dialed her number, they were getting yelled at for being late. "Look, I'm really sorry, but I was in the middle of a robbery or some shit like that, okay? All I know is that I ran away and now I'm not sure when I'll be there." Their manager sighed annoyed and told them to just hurry to their job. Y/N smiled and thanked her before hanging up. Looking up at the sky, they noticed smoke roughly rising from where they ran from. They figured that simply walking back might be their best bet.
Once Y/N finally recognized their surroundings again, they still continued to walk towards the smoke. Since they already were late, they figured that one look surely wouldn't hurt. Maybe the man they bumped into was still there too and they could properly apologize. It seemed unlikely, but not impossible. As they got closer, more and more people came running from the direction they were walking towards, which surely meant they were getting closer.
They turned the corner and looked up, horrified at what they saw. The fire was the least concerning thing to Y/N, it was what was burning that got to them. It was the truck from earlier with Red, Blue and their other two members, but they were either merged with it or completely dismembered. They stared at Red's head and neck that were just standing upright on the ground. Completely horrified and shocked, they wanted to scream. They wanted to cry out for help. But they were frozen. Unable to do anything.
Taking a couple steps back, they looked up at the most likely culprits. Four men. One of them who just finished slipping on his glove. The second he noticed Y/N, a chill ran down their spine. That must have been the same man they bumped into earlier.
"What do we have here? What are you supposed to be, a hero of some kind?" He took several steps in Y/N's direction, but they kept backing up, trying to keep their distance.
"Me? A-a hero...?" They kept stumbling on their words no matter how hard they tried to keep it together.
The man stopped and chuckled. "Of course, what was I thinking. I, at first, didn't want to judge you based on your appearance since so called 'heros' tend to be quite a surprise, right? I should have known better when I saw you earlier. You're defenseless. You didn't even try fighting back against that man. But look at him now." He gestured to Red and the two of them just looked down at him. Y/N couldn't help but feel a wave of satisfaction wash over them, but they still hated that they felt that way. Wait, did he just admit to watching them get harassed and doing nothing to help them?
"Are you not glad? Those vile, disgusting, diseased creatures got what they deserve. And who made that possible? No hero, let me tell you that. Tell me, do you even believe in your saviours, your heros?" The man began taking steps towards Y/N again, but they didn't back away this time.
Y/N simply shook their head as they stared up at the man towering over them. "I... never did..."
"Then I guess we have something in common." Just as the man slid off his glove, another man in a long white coat and plague mask spoke up. "Overhaul, don't you think you should just let this one go? We gotta hurry before any heros actually come."
After what felt like an eternity of staring into Y/N's eyes, the man, Overhaul, sighed and simply slid his glove back on. "You better hurry away before I change my mind. Just know this most definitely isn't our last encounter."
Swallowing, Y/N nodded, turned and ran away from the scene, stumbling over their own feet. They only stopped at the next block and decided to sit down on a nearby bench. 'What the fuck just happened...' They plugged their earbuds back into their ears in hopes of drowning out their own thoughts and questions. After several minutes of just staring up at the sky, they stood back up and walked to their job.
Once Y/N was there, they got an earful by their manager, scolding them for being so terribly late. "You even look completely filthy, look at you!" She reached over and picked a bit of purple fluff off of their shoulder, Y/N immediately knew where that came from. It must have come off of Overhaul's coat when they bumped into him.
Maybe their gut feeling was right.
