trust issues
Annabeth had always had trust issues. She had never trusted her step mom, and only trusted her father partially. When Luke and Thalia had found her, she was happy for a while. But then, too soon Thalia was killed. Out of two people she had fully trusted, one was gone. When Luke betrayed her, she had cracked. She couldn't trust anyone. She'd built up walls, locked them, and thrown the key to tartarus. to trust was to show vulnerability and interdependence. So when she'd met Percy, she could see he wanted to be her friend through thick and thin. he wanted to be her rock. the one she could trust no matter what. He wanted to be what Luke had been before Kronos. But every time she thought about him, she thought about Luke and how he had hurt her. No matter how hard she tried to trust Percy 100%, there would always be that one part of her that screamed "Run away before it's too late." When she started dating Percy, she had made a pact with herself. if he hurt her, that would be it. All of her trust would run out. Annabeth never made new friends at the boarding schools she went to. People tried to approach her and make friends, but it never happened. Alot of people who tried to befriend her often asked the same questions. "what did I do?", "why don't you want to be my friend?", "was it something I said?" Annabeth always said the same exact thing. "no, no. you're a nice person, really. it's me. I don't make many friends. I just have trust issues." Percy was well aware of this and when he gave her the ruby red pendant for her birthday, made her a promise. "I promise to never, ever hurt you. I will never betray you. because that's how love works."
