Chapter 2:

It was him. I couldn’t believe Matthew was in front of me after so many years without contact.

“Matth-....” was all I could say before everything went black.

*Dream/Flashback*

(A/N: What Alena dreamt about was an action earlier in her life. It’s basically a flashback of how her and Matthew last saw each other.)

We were down by my pool. Ryan, Sophia, Zack, Matthew, and I. Sophia and I were 8 years old; Ryan and Zack were 10 years old; and Matthew was 9 years old. We were having a fun time until we heard a loud crash. A man, who I have seen in pictures before, came raging toward me. Something in the back of my head told me he was my father. I believed he was truly my father because my grandmother showed me a picture of him once or twice before. My thoughts are interrupted by a scream.

“ALENA MOVE!” Matthew yells from the pool. I then felt a hard cold wall against my side and I heard a loud slap. I look to find Matthew he wasn’t where he was before. No. He was on the door clutching the side of his cheek that was bruised and now bleeding. ‘Matthew saved me’ I thought. My father lunged at me again. He went to slap my face but I dodged it and it hit my arm instead. My arm was as purple as Matthew’s face but my father’s ring had cut me more than it cut Matthew. Blood was now gushing out of my arm Matthew was trying so hard not to cry. I was sobbing and bawling my eyes out not because the wounds I had stung. No. Because my own father did this to me when I had done nothing to hurt or affect him. Sophia, Zack, and Ryan ran away to my grandmother’s house down the street because they didn’t know what was happening. My mother then bursts through the back door and starts screaming at my father.

“YOU LEFT ME FOR 8 YEARS, WITH THAT!” She yells pointing at me. By this point Matthew came closer to me and was caressing where my father hurt me. I did the same to him. Once my father saw this he exploded.

“Get the f*ck away from her!” He pulled Matthew off of me and threw him by the back door. He picked my up and tossed me in the other direction. My parents were still fighting. My grandmother was here and she got Matthew and put him inside, she did the same with me quietly. We got into her car and drove to her house quickly. She took Matthew and I to the bathroom and cleaned us up a bit.

Matthew’s face looked horrible. His cheek had a huge gash above a disguising purple, black bruise he had near his jaw. His arms and legs had little cuts and bruises. But he had a deep cut on his knee that wouldn’t stop bleeding. He was still trying to stay strong, for me mostly.

I looked no better than Matthew. When I looked into the bathroom mirror, I saw something I never wanted to see. My arm was bloody and under the layer of blood my arm has swollen. Like Matthew’s face, my arm was purple and black. I had a deep cut on my forehead, and 2 long shallow cuts on both my cheeks.

My grandma, Isabella, had called Matthew’s grandmother and told her to get over here as soon as possible. Matthew and I were on the couch when his grandmother arrived. She gasped and tore him away from me. She started talking to my grandmother and my grandmother was begging her not to go to the police. Matthew looked at me with sad eyes and I returned a sympathetic smile. Matthew and his grandmother were walking to the door I got up and noticed the grandmothers were talking about Matthew and his family moving to another country. I started crying and Matthew started to cry, too. His grandmother announced it was time to go and separated us.

“I love you, don’t forget me” I whispered into his ear as I kissed his cheek.

“I love you too, I would never even dream of forgetting you.” He whispered back. He got into the backseat of his grandmother’s car. As the car pulled out of the driveway, Matthew put his hands into the shape of a heart and pressed it against the window. I smiled and did the same gesture to him. Once he was out of sight I started crying even harder. I thought that would be the last time I would ever see him.

*End of Dream/Flashback*

I awoke to strong arms lifting me. I knew it was Ryan by the way he played with my hair. I open my eyes slowly and smile weakly at Ryan. We were in a car. Zack’s car. Why? I thought back to what happened. Matthew, where was he? I looked to Zack in the driver’s seat. I saw someone was in the passenger seat but didn’t pay too much attention to it. I thought it would be one of the guys that were at Sophia’s house earlier. I was on Ryan’s lap and Sophia was next to me.

“You okay?” Ryan asks as we pull out of the pizzeria. I only nod my head and he pulls me closer to his chest. As we cuddled I felt a pair of eyes watching us. Zack and Sophia were used to our lovey dovey close friends moments. I thought the passenger seat held Michael, Kellan, Jacob, or Edward. But I thought wrong. It was Matthew. If looks could kill Ryan would be dead. Matthew was mentally shooting daggers at Ryan. I tensed up a bit and Ryan noticed. He bent over, kissed my forehead and whispered in my ear “He looks jealous of us don’t you think.”

I started blushing at the thought of Matthew being jealous of Ryan for being this close to me. I then start giggling and both Sophia and Ryan start laughing because they claim my giggles sound like ‘baby whales eating kangaroo fish while being stabbed in the tail 4 times’. Sophia’s laugh to me is hilarious so then I start full out laughing. Zack thinks my laugh is very funny, so then he starts laughing. Matthew is confused and just gets angry. I quietly point that out to Sophia and Ryan we bust out laughing again. Finally the laughing died down by the time we got to Sophia’s house. I pretended that I was asleep so Ryan would carry me out of the car and into the house. I heard some faint talking and then I was being carried. Ryan wasn’t carrying me. I got goosebumps at the feel of his baby soft skin on my back and under my knees. I gasped softly at the way he made my heart melt as he mumbled words not knowing I could hear him. He was saying this like ‘She’s can’t be mine anymore, she’s got someone already’ or ‘She’s so beautiful, how could she forget about what we had, I didn’t.’ He is such a sweetheart. I opened my eyes and looked at him smiling. He was still mumbling. I let out a small chuckle and he immediately shot his head down to where I was he saw me smiling. He looked back up and his cheeks stared to get red.

“What’s going on here?” Ryan asked with much sass.

“N-n-nothing-g” Matthew stuttered. It was my turn to blush. Matthew is so cute.

“Doesn’t look like ‘N-n-nothing-g’” Ryan shot back imitating Matthew’s stuttering. Ryan looked completely serious, but I could see right through him. I decided to play along with Ryan.

“He tried to k-kiss m-me” I stuttered out myself, feeling proud on how convincing it sounded.

Matthew’s eyes were wide. “No I didn’t.” He looked worried.

“You have no respect for anything do you?” Ryan was good at this. I smirked at Matthew. Matthew’s mouth fell wide open.
