Stumble (Borderlands fan Story)

Chapter 1

It was a normal day here at the Southern Shelf, my father had given me a new gun to practice hunting with. Of course the second I got the new gun I had to use it to shoot at some Bullymongs. My pet Skrakk sat beside me, scratching behind her ear as I took shots from the cliff side. "Anya, you wanna go play?" I asked as I looked at her. She had already jumped to her feet and began to wag her tail, or at least what she has for a tail. She carefully began to jump down the side of the cliff and lunging at a few bullymongs as I shot at other ones who charged her from the side. After what felt like hours I hear a panicked voiced call my name. I thought my father was just worried because he couldn't see me, but that thought quickly faded once I heard multiple gun shots going off. "Anya let's go!" She scaled the side of the cliff once more, running to my side. I quickly began to run back to my home, only stopping for a moment to see the attackers. From the corner of my eye I saw someone charging me, and before I could react Anya began to take him down. I quickly ran to the gate that was open with my father looking around in a panic before I entered and called for Anya. Once she ran inside the walls I grabbed Hammerlock and slammed the gate shut.

-Time skip-

After hours of sitting in the house, my gun close to my chest and on the verge of falling asleep, I realized I hadn't heard shooting for a while. My father and I had both been quiet and only looked at each other when we heard someone trying to jump the electric fence. As I was about to speak, the shooting began to happen once again. I froze and looked towards my front door before a electronic voice broke the silence. It was claptrap! And he was using the Echo to get a hold of us. Finally, the shooting ceased and claptrap spoke once again. 

"Hammerlock! Links! Come out you're safe now!" I began to head towards the door but was quickly stopped by Hammerlock.
"Please, let me go first. Just in case." I stepped back and he began to walk out the door and once he exited, I followed with Anya beside me once again. As we reached the gate, claptrap was standing there, his eye ripped out of his face. Behind him stood a woman with black waves hair and pale green eyes. A Rakk flew low beside her, which I could only assume was her pet. I watched as my father started to put claptrap eye back in place and crossed my arms.
"I'm sorry you had to meet him before the rest of us." Hammerlock spoke to the mysterious woman. "I am Sir Hammerlock and this is my daughter Linka." He pointed towards me and I waved my hand to her. I could tell she was a bounty hunter by the way she held herself up.

"I'm Makani, and this is my Rakk Neuk." Her voice was cold and steady as she spoke. She clearly was a woman who meant business. I heard Anya growl and noticed Makani had her hand on her gun.

"Hey hey, I suggest you take your hand off your gun unless you wanna know what Skagg teeth feel like. Anya doesn't take to kindly to potential threats on her territory." I then turned to Anya, "Anya be nice they just don't know you."

Her eyes shifted between me and Anya, "As long as it doesn't hurt me or Neuk, we're fine but as far as I'm concerned I just single handed just got your territory back while you were in that cage so ease off." Her voice remained mostly flat but has new sharpness to it.

I rolled my eyes and smirked. "Ooh If you want to flirt you're gonna have to buy me a drink first." I teased before my father stepped into the conversation.

"Linka be nice. Sorry about that. I thank you kindly for helping with those bandits, is there anything I can help you with in return?" He smiled kindly at the woman as I turned to face Anya, crouching down to run her stomach.

"Actually, yes. I'm looking for a bandit leader names Slagfist." She spoke nicely to Hammerlock. I paused and looked up at her.

"I know where he is- I've been stalking him for months now." I smirked, knowing I had information she clearly needed. Her gaze was cold as she waited for me to tell her while Hammerlock looked at me.

"You what!?" His voice cracks slightly as he watches me.

"I can show you." I spoke to Makani who rolled her eyes

"Or, I could just go find him since you let it slip that he was in the area. This isn't a job for kids who live sheltered lives." She glared and turned to walk away. I paused and watched her walk away. I felt the anger begin to rise in my chest and my arm began to burn slightly as I watched her grab her Rakks tail with her gloved hand and she was lifted from the ground and flew off.

"Linka I-" Hammerlock began before I looked away from him and once again walked off towards the cemetery to shoot more Bullymongs.

"Why the hell did I not fight back!?" I screamed knowing Anya was the only one listening to me.  "And who the hell was she calling a kid!? I'm 22!" I kicked a rock as I walked and soon arrived to the cemetery. I began shooting at Bullymongs and venting to Anya. Once I thought it was safe I took a break, looking up at Helios.
"What if we just left this planet Anya? Do you think they would let a Skrakk like you on board?" I sighed and began to zone out, dreaming about what life on Helios would be like. I was broken from my thoughts when I heard Anya snarling and looked down, just in time to see a Bullymongs fist coming towards my face. I didn't have time to react and was flung back quite a bit. After I hit the ground I could hear Anya attacking the bullymong and felt a stinging sensation on my face. I began to get up after my face met the ice but I noticed blood dripping into the snow and brought my hand to my face to feel three long gashes across my face. Panic rushed over me and I let out a blood curdling scream before blacking out.
