I think we've all heard this in some form or another at some point in our lives but it actually doesn't mean quite what you think it means. When reading the Bible you have to pay attention to context and word choice more than anything else or you will misunderstand. John uses the same word for truth many times throughout this book of the bible. The word for truth he uses comes from the Greek word altheia. The full meaning of this word is unveiled reality. So, what he was really saying in the original translation is that the unveiled reality of who He is and who God is will set you free.
