I woke up early so Betty and I could get back from the city with enough time to get ready. As I looked through the dresses, Betty sighed as she tried to find something to wear.
"You okay over there?" I chuckle, and she looks over the clothes rack.
"I can't find anything to wear." I pull out a dress from the rack and hold it up for her to see.
"What about this one?" It was a pretty blue dress, and she scrunched her nose and shook her head. I shrug and put it back before continuing to look.
"So, how did your mom take it when she saw you in your uniform?"
"She wanted me to take it off and quit, but I told her that I was going to stay." She smiles, and I chuckle.
"Look at you, Betty, finally taking control of your own life." I tease her and she rolls her eyes.
"It's time for a fresh start. My mom needs to understand that I'm not Polly. She needs to stop treating me as if I were her." Betty confesses, and I couldn't help but agree with her. I understood Alice was trying her hardest to keep her daughter safe, but sometimes you just have to loosen the leash.
"I'm glad you're taking control of your life." I continued to look through the dresses until I finally found the right one.
"I don't know what dress to choose." I flip through the dresses and groan.
"Well, what about this one?" Betty holds up a dress, and I scrunch my nose at the color.
"Too pink." She sighs and puts the dress back.
"What about you, Betty? Do you know what you're going to wear?"
"I like this one." It was a solid pink dress that went down to her knees, and I smiled.
"It's pretty, it suits you."
"You sure, it's kind of childish, don't you think. We're sophomores."
"Betty, everyone's style is different. My mom always says that if you don't feel comfortable wearing it, then don't buy it. Would you rather wear that or this?" I pick up a dress that wasn't something she would wear, and she shakes her head. I walk to a different rack of dresses and finally find a blue dress that I like.
"I think you found it." Betty walked over and touched the dress, admiring it.
"I'm gonna get it, do you think Jack will like it?" I don't even know why I cared if he liked it or not; it was only one night, and it didn't matter.
"I'm sure he will." She puts her hands on my shoulders, and I hold the dress up to my body, looking in the mirror.
"Alright, well let's go pay for these because I'm starving and I could use a greasy slice of pizza right about now."

I walked down the stairs in my dress, and my brother was in his suit. My mom stood there with my dad, holding a camera to take a picture of us. I stand there, and she snaps the picture of us before giving us both a hug.
"You guys look adorable."
"Stay safe tonight." My dad hugs me, and I nod.
"We will." There was a knock at the door, and Nick looked over at me.
"I thought you were going with me."
"Jack said he was picking me up, so we can go out to dinner before."
"I don't think that's..."
"Nick, I can take care of myself." I grab my sweater and open the door to see a smiling Jack. His smile drops when he sees me. At first, I thought he didn't like the dress, but by then his happiness turned into amazement.
