Chapter 5: The Bloodbath

I wake up, my heart beating fast. Today was the day I've been dreading. I get out of bed and rush adrenaline runs through me. I walk faster than I mean to and trip over the rug. I get in the shower and think that this is the last shower I will ever take. I quickly put my hair into two French braids. I go downstairs and eat breakfast with my friends. I look at all of them. Addiana, Paige, Addie, Ethan, Coby, Blake, Allicean, Cooper, Abby, Kaylee. We all eat in silence, and I barely eat

Two bites before my Aunt Katniss pushes me into the limo. I am taken to where the glass tubes that lift us into the arena are. I go into my room where my glass tube is and see Allison, with tears falling down her face. I run over and give her a hug.

" I'm so sorry," Allison says. I don't say anything. I just pull away.

" You have to win," she says.

"I will try my hardest," I tell her. An announcer says ten seconds to get in the tube. I get in and I feel my body start shaking. It's time. The tube starts lifting up and the sun hits against my face, almost blinding me. I get so nervous, my ears start ringing.

" Ladies and Gentlemen, let the 94th annual Hunger Games begin! May the odds be ever in your favor," an announcement says. In front of the cornucopia, a digital countdown starts.

60, 59,58, 57, 56, 55, 54. I stop looking at the clock and look around me. The arena is half forest and half meadow. The meadow side looks safe and promising. I look around at the pedestals. There are rows and rows of people. Coby, Paige, Addie, and Addiana are in my row, the first row. Kaylee, Cooper, Allicean, Blake, and Abby must be in another row. Finally, the countdown is down to the final seconds. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. A loud cannon sounds and I jump off of my pedestal and sprint for the cornucopia. I run into the mouth and grab a backpack and a lot of throwing knives. I grab a sword just in time to turn and find someone running right towards me. The person keeps running for me. When he gets closer I close my eyes and swing my sword. I hear something drop next to my feet, and a loud cannon goes off. I look down, I killed him! But, where is his head? I look around, confused. Found It! DON'T BARF. DON'T BARF. I go back to trying to get things. I grab another backpack and an ax. I turn around in time to watch Paige impale two people at the same time, with a really long sword. I feel a smile of satisfaction stretch over my face. But then I make a horrible realization. One of the two kids was Abby. Paige must have noticed also because she covered her mouth with her hands. I start running over to her, but then I feel my body get lifted off the ground. I feel like I'm about six feet in the air and then finally realize what was happening. Someone got a hold of me. I screamed so high pitched and strangled, I didn't know it was possible for it to come out of a human's throat. I try to turn my head to see who it was, but the person threw me down to the ground. I feel my body hit the ground and the air leaves me. I look up to see a really tall person, probably a career, looking at me. He had a sickle, with a really sharp point. He raises it to try and spike me, and I know it's the end. I am not ready to die yet. So I grab my shoe and throw it at his head. It hits his head and I grab a knife while he is distracted. I get ready to throw it, but then a long sword goes through his body. The tall person falls, and I see Paige.

" Split up!" I yell. She runs left and I run right. I try to grab as much stuff as I can while running. I grab two more backpacks and a couple more weapons. I see that a kid named Porter from my class is screaming for help. I start to run over to him. I almost reach him, but then I feel something hit my head. Hard. My legs feel like jelly. And then I fall into unending darkness. Was I dead?? No, I couldn't be. For what feels like hours of darkness, my senses finally come to. I wake up to see all of my friends standing around me.

" What happened?" I ask.

" You got a rock thrown into your head," Ethan says. Once all of my senses come back, I feel my head start throbbing.

" Uhm, while you were asleep, I removed the rock and stitched your wound with the emergency kit we got." Paige clears her throat and turns around.

" How did you kill Abby?" I ask her.

" Uhm, I didn't know how long the sword was. I think she was trying to kill the same person, and she was super close to him. So when I stabbed him, I pushed it all the way through, and it went through Abby too." Paige explains. I just look away.
" Where is Cooper?" I ask. I feel fear overtake me. Did he die?? I don't see him. As soon as I asked the question, my friends turned and pointed to a tree, where I saw Cooper crying. I run over to him.

" What happened?" I ask him.

" I didn't mean to. I didn't mean to." Is all he says. I grab his shoulders to stop him from rocking.

" What happened?" I ask him again. I look around and count everybody. Cooper, Ethan, Addie, Paige, Kaylee, Blake, Coby, and Addiana.

" Where is Aliceann?" I ask. I look to Addiana, with her tearstained face.

" I didn't mean to," Cooper says.

" Someone tell me what the heck happened!" I yell.

" I accidentally killed her. I really didn't mean to. I was trying to throw a knife at someone, and Allicean was right next to the cornucopia. When I threw the knife, the guy dodged it and ricocheted off of the cornucopia. It hit Allicean in the back. I stayed with her until she died." Cooper explains, with more tears running down his face than ever. I look down at his hands, they had dry blood. He must have been trying to stop the bleeding. I look back at Addiana.

" Are you okay?" I ask her.

" No. I just lost my only sibling in these stupid games." Addiana answers, angrily. She walks over to Cooper and pulls him into a tight hug.

" I'm sorry," he says.

" I forgive you," she answers. An anthem made by the capitol starts to play, and an image flashes into the sky. The first screen says The Fallen. I look up and see the kid that I killed died first. We keep watching and then a familiar face flashes across the sky. It was Abby. We watch a little more and the last face was Allicean's. She looked so calm and gentle. When it's over, we share our supplies. Altogether we have twelve backpacks, and more weapons than we know what to do with. I look over to my left and see smoke rising in the distance. Idiot. There is always some stupid person that sets a fire, and then it draws tributes towards the smoke. I hear a high pitched scream, and then a loud cannon. I look around to make sure nobody is near us.

" We should sleep on shifts," I suggest.

" Good idea, I'll take the first watch." Coby offers. We all set up the spots we are sleeping at. I pull out my sleeping bag from one of my backpacks, and a couple of knives. I feel a little bit of satisfaction rush through my body. I survived my first day in the Hunger Games.
