Things were, well, quiet at Bulgaria's end of the table. Bulgaria didn't particularly like to socialise with people he wasn't close with, and the only person near him that he actually wanted to talk to (Romania) was unavailable.
Well, that wasn't true. Bulgaria could talk to him, but- nevermind, he couldn't. Even thinking about it made him nauseous. Romania had been making him feel really anxious lately. More so than usual.
"Bulgariaaa! You're not paying attention!" Romania teased.
Bulgaria hid his surprise and anxiety with a look of frustration. "I'm not in the mood, Romania."
The other nation looked at him quizzically, tilting his head to the right, "Did someone piss in your coffee today?" He asked, trying to lighten the mood. "I don't drink coffee." "Bul, I'm joking." "Um, yeah, I knew that." "Pretty sure you didn-" "Just shut up so I can pay attention."
Romania looked hurt by this, but he was also kind of dramatic sometimes, so Bulgaria just ignored him and tried to mentally console himself. Talking to Romania was stressful.
"Is your boyfriend ignoring you now?" Hungary asked Romania, smirking at him. "He'll come around. I'm sure you wouldn't know that people can actually forgive each other, since no one would ever forgive you." Hungary rolled her eyes at the weak attempt at an insult.
"Stop it," Bulgaria muttered to Romania. He hated when he fought with Hungary, and it especially bothered him now. It seemed like everything Romania did was bothering him.
"Aren't you still-" "We're in a meeting."
Romania groaned. "Don't remind me." "This is why we're both-" "Disappointments? Yeah, thanks for the reminder." Bulgaria sighed. "Sorry." "It's fine," Romania quickly replied, staring intensely at the table.
Did I just make things worse? Bulgaria wondered. It had to be at least partly his fault, so... most likely, yes Things were really just swell right now, Bulgaria thought, mentally rolling his eyes.
Romania frowned at the table, bending his neck down slightly and letting his hair fall in his eyes. He traced intricate patterns on the table, trying to ignore the world around him, which really worried- and, of course, bothered- Bulgaria.
Bulgaria gently grabbed his hand and laced their fingers together, ignoring how his body burned with embarrassment and how his palms immediately became thick with sweat.
"Romania, I... I'm sorry, I'm just out of it, just... don't do this to yourself. You get lost in your thoughts and then it gets to you. I don't want that. And neither do you."
Romania looked up at Bulgaria, not moving from his position, "Want to get lunch together?" "Sure." Romania didn't smile, which concerned Bulgaria even more, but he decided to let it go. He'd be sad if Romania was acting this way, too.
And so, he let go of Romania's hand, causing the latter to sigh and fold his arms on the table, resting his head on them. Meetings sucked.
Bulgaria tapped Romania on the shoulder.
Romania mumbled something incoherent, to which Bulgaria rolled his eyes. Of course he'd been sleeping during a meeting.
"Are we going for lunch or not?" "Where do you want to go?" Romania mumbled. "What do you want?"
Romania gave a non-committal shrug.
"You can choose, Rom." "No thoughts head empty," Romania sleepily responded. Cute.
