My day off

“God, not again, I thought I had turned that stupid thing off”, I moaned in half asleep, and desperately hit my alarm clock – hoping he would finally calm down. Well, unfortunately, misconception. But the stupid thing just kept roaring and couldn’t be stopped by my little beating attack.

Tormented, I straightened up and picked up the alarm clock. Slowly I knew how to shut him up, I turned him over and "drained his lifeblood" by taking out the batteries.

With a satisfied smile I noticed that the noise had finally disappeared. I dropped the alarm clock on the floor, the batteries beside it. I'll put them back in tonight, I thought, sinking back down on my pillow.

Just once again almost arrived in the dreamland Rihanna suddenly started singing next to my bed. I was startled and needed a moment to remember that it was my phone that was just calling. Doesn’t it ever end? You want to sleep in peace and half the world is interested in you! Hoping that he would stop by itself and the caller would quit, I tried to ignore my ringtone.   Shit – unfortunately, misconceined. Shortly the silence returned to my bedroom, with a satisfied expression I tried to slide back into the Land of Dreams. But also this third attempt was abruptly interrupted. Rhianna’s voice rang again next to me.

I was starting to get mad! If the caller didn’t have a damn good reason to keep me from sleeping, this wouldn’t end well. With my eyes closed, I was groping around on my dessert. I found everything but the stupid phone. That was a great fit for me again. Good luck? No, I didn’t know anything like that, or to put it in a nutshell, luck didn’t like me.

Finally, after a long search, I had my cell phone in my hand. With one eye, I stared at the display to see which person would dare to disturb me at this hour. My boss’s name was lit up in bright letters on my screen. Suddenly I was wide awake and panic was spreading in me. Did I forget I had to work today? No, I don’t forget something like that, do I? I was off today, so it wasn’t my fault, this time I didn’t do anything. Oh, man, that was me again. Slightly nervous, I pressed the green handset and held the phone to my ear. My boss’s voice was hectic, almost hysterical as he shouted into the phone, “She quit! Just quit! Today of all days, how can she? These.......”

That’s all he got. Since I didn’t really want to listen to any insults, I interrupted him quickly. " Joe... what the hell is so important that you’re gonna ring me up?” I asked him calmly, yet I had a certain sharpness in my voice. In the mornings, I was particularly undrinkable when I was annoyed before I had my first coffee, and Joe knew that too. He was actually a great guy, the ideal boss and for me more like a father’s replacement than a boss. He owned a cafe downtown not far from Big Ben.

"Elise quit - just now - just like that" he stammered choppily and quickly, adding meekly "I know it's your day off today, but can you fill in for Elise please?". Oh man, that's the question I've been dreading. Actually, I just wanted to study today and prepare for the exams, but on the other hand, I could use the money. In my head, I weighed up all the arguments in a flash - well, as fast as I could at that awful early hour - and found that the arguments on the side of jumping in outweighed the arguments on the other side. I sat up in bed. " Sure, I'll do it," I said and then asked when I had to be there. At six," Joe returned curtly. With a startled glance at the clock, I realized it was only 2 hours away.

I discussed the details with Joe, and I got off the line after another 10 minutes. The baked goods were already there, Joe said. So I was already able to cross this point off the to-do list; it still did not make it more manageable. I had to take a shower and get ready, additionally pack all my learning materials and come to the studio. Well, if I really make it on time, then I’m amazed at myself. So I didn’t flare for long and got out of my wonderfully cuddly bed. Still tired, I shuffled into the bathroom and jumped quickly into the shower. The blood in my veins froze as a cold splash of water splashed down on me. Shit, Shit, Shit... it’s cold.

Well, there was one good thing: I was definitely awake.... even wide awake. You've got to be kidding me ..... The shower temperature knob was already set to warm. I'll test the water again. But no, no change and definitely still cold - ICE COLD. "Close your eyes and get through" was the only way out for me now. I kept the water usage as short as possible, as I had little desire to go out here as a "popsicle".10 min. I've never been this fast before, but with this ice water, it's no wonder. I blow-dried my hair and looked in the mirror. There they were again my light natural curls like they also had my mother. They look beautiful, but are hell to straighten. Well today it didn't matter much anyway, I always had a high braid at work so the curls wouldn't show up much.

After I had put on my make-up, I chose a suitable work outfit. I’m not like some people who stand in front of the closet for hours and don’t know what to wear. My motto was chic, but comfortable and practical. After a short search I decided on a tight pair of jeans and a white blouse with a black leather jacket. Yes, that must be good enough, after all, I’m only here to make coffee and hand out the baked goods to people.

In no time at all, I threw my books and other stuff into my bag. Shoes on and I was out the door. After running down the stairs, I stopped in front of the door, rooted to the spot, and slapped the flat of my hand across my forehead. Oh, man, I'm stupid too. There was a yellow note stuck in front of me that said in big letters "There will be no hot water from 5:00 to 8:00 on Monday, the pipes are being repaired!" How many times have I walked past that sign? 20 maybe even 30 times. Yes, once again typical of me! 15 minutes later I was on the bus waiting to reach my destination stop. Nervously, I drummed my fingers on my bag. I'd done it many times before, but it's always special when you're surrounded by so many famous people.
