Chapter 26

Hayes POV
Caroline brought me to the center of the room with her and Shawn, and stood really close to me.

Shawn came out and said Happy birthday to her and everything then started to sing Happy Birthday.

I felt my hand touch her's and on instinct, I held it in mine. It is her birthday and she's really nice and everything so why not. She'll get over it anyways.

After a while I saw Cameron alone by the cake. "Hey Cam." "Hey." He looked kind of sad. "What's wrong?" I asked "Nothin." "Where's Nicole?" I asked "She went back to the hotel." he said. "Why?" I asked with concern in my voice.

"She didn't want to be here." I could tell I looked clueless and Cameron looked annoyed. "You were with Caroline not Nicole. She got lonely and bored, plus she said she was tired. I would have left too." He said then walked away.

I went back outside where no one else was and it was quiet. I called Nicole and she never picked up the phone. I called about 7 more times then gave up.

"Dammit, Nicole." I said under my breath.

She probably hates me because I kissed Caroline. In my defense, it is her birthday and she is just a friend. She'll get over it.

I sat there for about ten minutes just starring at the pool water. It reminded me of her and the date we had last night. Her eyes were a beautiful blue, and I told her I loved her. She probably won't believe me now though. I told her I loved her then I kissed another girl. "I am such a jerk." I said to myself.

I sent her texts and Snap Chats and even tried to call one more time

"Maybe she's asleep?" I sighed to myself.

Nicole's POV
I was sitting in the bed, legs crossed, watching Spanish soap operas. I couldn't understand what they were saying but I could tell if someone was about to get beat up or something by the look on their faces.

Alexis FaceTimed me.
"Hey." I said "Hey. What's up?" She asked "I am watching Spanish soap operas." "Is Hayes there?" She asked "No."

"Why, where is he?" She asked "He's at a party." "Why aren't you there?" She asked "I got bored." "Ok." she said. she didn't sound like she believed me though.

"He took me on a pretty fancy date in the park yesterday night," I said while trying to change the subject "And you know how I've always wanted to do the Lady and the Tramp thing?" "Yeah." "My wish came true." "Awe, That's so cute!" She said

"Yeah. Sometimes I just wish I had never fallen in love though." "Why?" She asked "There's pain too, it's mostly good, but there's a lot of heartbreak and awkwardness. I kind of wish I never fell in love with Hayes." "What?! Why?!" She yelled "I wish he had never smiled at me that day, I wish we never kissed that day, I wish I had never come to Magcon." "Wait, what happened to sometimes?" She asked "I don't know.There's just so much hatred and stuff. Once you fall into it you can't get back out, no matter how hard you try. I still feel like I'm about to faint whenever Hayes calls me beautiful, my legs still turn to jelly when he smiles at me, and when I look into his eyes the world pauses for that moment. Just to think that one day it's all gonna end though."

"Well, maybe you can keep it up?" She suggested "I don't know. We're in 8th grade. I don't even think either of us know what love really is." I shrugged "Well, when do you thing it's gonna end?" She asked "The end of 8th grade... The middle of high school... the end of high school... Tomorrow." I said a little quieter.

"And-- Wait a minute I just got a SnapChat from Hayes..... Ignore." I said "Why? Don't ignore!" She yelled "I'm just not in the mood." I said. She looked so mad at me "Don't give me that look. I will I promise." "Ok, good. You have to tell me what it's about though." She said "Ok. I will."

"I have to go." She said "K. Bye." "Bye." She said then hung up.

I tossed my phone onto the bed and I felt my stomach start to grumble. "I'm lonely and hungry. When will the pain end?!"

I put on a pair of shoes, grabbed the door key and my phone and headed out the door. "I wonder if they have a vending machine? if they do I want to get a--"

My phone started to buzz. Again. "Hayes. leave me alon-" it was from Cameron this time.

"Hello?" "Hey Nicole. You ok?" He asked "Uhh. Yeah." "Nicole I might be a guy, but I'm not clueless. Something's wrong. Just tell me." "Ok, fine. Tonight I didn't even want to be at this girl's party and the only reason I came was because Hayes wanted me to. I was pretty much alone the whole time, except for when I was with you guys." "I told you, he needs the money, and if he doesn't listen to her then he won't get paid as much. I know it's hard but.. he still loves you." "Yeah, I guess you're right. He called me like 8 times tonight." I said "Why didn't you pick them up?" "I- I just.." I took a deep breath in, "Hayes kissed Caroline, and didn't even hesitate to stop." I said

"Oh."

"When will you guys be back?" I asked "I don't know we're probably gonna leave in a few minutes." "Okay." "What are you doing right now, besides sitting?" He asked "I am trying to find a vending machine." "Try by the pool. I think I saw one there." He suggested "Ok. thanks." "What are you guys doing?" I asked "I'm sitting down on the couch. Hayes is outside, alone, With his head down." "Is he on his phone?" I asked "Nope. he looks so depressed." "Now he knows what it feels like." I mumbled to myself

"Hey Cameron, my mom is calling me. I have to go. I'll see you later though." I lied "Ok. call me if you need anything. bye." he said "Bye."

I went back up to my room and just forgot about the food. I wasn't hungry anymore.

I got back up to the room and crawled in my bed.
