“How are you holding up?” Hunter suddenly asked, breaking the silence that had enveloped them.

Amanda let out a bitter chuckle, glancing around at their surroundings. The supposed guards meant to watch over them were passed out in a drunken stupor.

“Couldn’t be better,” she replied sarcastically, her voice laced with frustration. “Your version of kidnapping is definitely an upgrade. At least I had four square meals and a bed. Sitting on this hard floor is starting to take its toll on my butt.”

“I’m glad you’re managing to keep your sense of humor amidst all of this. Morning is approaching; I guess you can start counting down,” he reassured her.

She searched his gaze for sincerity. “Were you actually serious about what you said earlier? About us finding a way to escape?” Her voice trembled slightly, a mix of hope and skepticism.

Hunter’s gaze met hers, unwavering and determined. “Have I ever broken a promise I’ve made to you?” he replied, conviction ringing in his voice.

Amanda paused, the weight of his words sinking in. “So, how long?” she asked, curiosity piquing her interest.

“Huh? How long what?” Hunter replied, momentarily confused.

“How long have you been here in town?” she clarified.

“We've had this conversation before. I already told you about three months now.” he answered.

“I don’t get it. Why did you let me go if you’re just going to drag me back again?” Her frustration bubbled over, confusion intertwining with anger.

“Who said I was going to drag you back? I told you back then; I wasn’t keeping you there permanently. I just wanted to hide you from the world for a little while. I really missed you, that’s why I came to see you,” he explained, his tone calm and steady.

“Fucking lunatic,” she blurted out, unable to contain her exasperation.

“Calling your future husband a lunatic isn’t very nice, my love,” he retorted, a playful smirk creeping onto his face.

“Shove it,” she snapped, not in the mood for his banter.

He chuckled, but the tension lingered in the air. “By the way… when that Belvis guy was here earlier, he mentioned a woman’s name. Who is she?” Amanda inquired, curiosity piqued.

Hunter hesitated, a brief moment of tension filling the air. “Jealous? Are you wondering if I have another woman?”

“Like hell I would care! If she really is your girlfriend, then tell her to switch places with me,” Amanda quickly defended, her heart racing.

Hunter sighed before replying, “That is my mother’s name.”

“Your mother? Your birth mom, right?” she asked, seeking clarification.

The chains that bound him rattled slightly as he nodded. “She was killed years ago, and I have a hunch that the man who killed her is the mastermind behind our kidnapping,” he revealed.

“Huh,” Amanda uttered, taken aback. It was the first time she had heard him speak of his family, especially his mother. She had never known she was murdered.

“You know who killed her?” she asked, her voice filled with shock and concern.

“The man who killed her just so happened to be my own father,” he answered, causing her eyes to widen in disbelief.

“Hunter…” she trailed off, concern flooding her voice as footsteps approached. She instinctively looked ahead and saw the men, who had been dead asleep moments ago, now walking around. Belvis had returned, pushing a metal restaurant tray covered with a white cloth.

“Well, I’m so glad you’re already awake,” Belvis commented, his tone laced with malice as he walked closer.

Amanda’s stomach growled at the thought of food. She hadn’t eaten since their captivity began, and hunger gnawed at her. Belvis approached Hunter, who was still confined to the chair, and placed the tray in front of him.

“I went out and collected a few things to make you comfortable. I’m sorry it took so long. I was carefully selecting things that won’t kill you immediately,” Belvis said with a twisted grin.

He removed the cloth covering the tray, revealing strange-looking devices Amanda had never seen before. It didn’t take much to guess their intended purpose. Her heart sank, realizing what was about to happen.

“You know how this goes, right? When torturing all those people, you must have realized that someday you’d be tortured yourself,” Belvis commented, his sadistic satisfaction evident.

Silence hung in the air, heavy with the weight of impending pain. Before Amanda could protest, Belvis struck Hunter with a powerful punch across the cheek.

“Hunter!” she called out, her voice filled with fear and desperation.

With adrenaline coursing through her veins, she stood up abruptly, yanking at the chains that bound her in the process. Determination fueled her actions as she fought against the restraints, desperately trying to reach Hunter and protect him from the impending torture.

“I’m okay, Amanda. Don’t worry. I hope you remember what I told you earlier. Treat everything you see like you would a horror movie—no, in fact, turn the other way and close your eyes,” he ordered, his voice steady despite the pain.

Belvis roughly gripped Hunter’s hair, forcing him to look up. “I hate that neutral, nonchalant look you always try to maintain. Let’s see how long it takes for you to start begging like a little bitch,” he taunted before hitting Hunter again.

Belvis stared in Amanda’s direction, a sinister smile spreading across his face. “What’s that expression all about, my lady? Aren’t you supposed to be celebrating? This is the man who kidnapped you, right? He kept you locked up away from your family and friends, hit you, probably took advantage of you multiple times. You should be watching him pay for his wrongdoings with a smile. I mean, if he dies, you’d definitely be set free,” Belvis said, his words dripping with malice.

Amanda’s eyes widened in horror. Kill him? That’s not what she wanted. She hated what he did to her, but she never wished him dead. And what was that man even talking about? Hunter had never hit her nor taken advantage of her.

“Hey, who gave you permission to talk to my bride? Trash like you doesn’t deserve to converse with her,” Hunter shot back defiantly.

“Why can’t you just fucking shut up?” Belvis screamed, slapping Hunter hard across the face.

“You are so fucking annoying!” Belvis yelled, his rage boiling over.

He quickly grabbed a whip from the tray and started hitting Hunter continuously.

“I wish I could fucking kill you!” Belvis screamed.

“Hey! What are you doing? Stop it!” Amanda screamed, her heart racing.

“Shut up!” Belvis screamed back, his fury directed at her.

“I’m going to make you beg. You hear me?” he yelled, the sadistic pleasure evident in his voice.
