"Hyunjin!" Chu called out, "Mica, dinner is ready!"
I threw a glance at Hyunjin and he at I as we existed the room. We had both sat on each other's phones, far away from each other in his room and I think the only thing that was said, was me telling him the toilet paper was almost out.
We walked into the kitchen and all the parents were already sitting down and I felt a ping of sadness in my heart, realizing, when I did get married whether I wanted to or not, he wasn't going to be there. I pushed the feeling away, not wanting to cry in front of who would be my family.
There was two seats left at the dinner table and of course they were side by side, being preserved for Hyunjin and I. I sat down and looked at the food that was spread nearly all over the table. It was Indian food, and some of my favorite kinds.
"Thank you for the food," I commented as we all dipped our plates. Chu nodded, "Hyunjin said we should Indian food. I've never cooked it before but with the help of your mom, it was easy as cake," she muttered.
I cocked my head and my brows furrowed, "Hyunjin said you should cook indian food?" I asked and she nodded, and I glanced at him and he was already eating, picking up another piece of food with his chopsticks.
I picked up my chopsticks and silently preyed they wouldn't see me struggling. I wasn't bad with them, but I was no pro.
"Mica how old are you?" Jeong asked and I swallowed my food, grabbing my water infront of me, "18." He nodded, "Are you grades good?" He asked and it took everything inside me not to show an action that might say other wise, "Yes."
My mother glanced at him, not liking the question herself but I tried to put myself in his shoes. He was looking out for his son but hey, if he didn't like me, maybe we could get this bullshit over with.
"So when do we start planning the wedding?" My mom asked, changing the subject, taking the heat off of just me. I almost choked on my food and Hyunjin ended up choking on the water he was currently drinking.
"Oh god, are you okay Hyunjin?" Chu asked and he nodded, coughing less hard. I looked down at my plate, hoping his coughing distracted them but to my disappointment my mom was already bringing up again, and for that, I wanted to smack her.
Instead, I mentally face palmed and waited for the grown ups to decided my fait. "A couple months before graduation?" Chu asked, looking at all of us. But it just angered me to talk about this. If I weren't in there home, I would get up and leave and lock myself in my room.
"Sounds good to me," My mother said, looking at Hyunjin and I expectantly. I shrugged awkwardly and shifted uncomfortably in my seat, "Sounds fine."
"Hyunjin?" Jeong asked Hyunjin. He looked at his father and nodded, "Sounds good." Him and I hadn't said a word since we got down here to each other and I wondered how they could make us do something like this, how is this even legal? Or even a thing in 2021? Didn't it upset them that their kids weren't happy?
Suddenly my appetite disappeared and my mother squealed, "Aw think about your wedding dress, Mica," my mom said, smiling brightly at me. But the thought of that right now, repulsed me.
"Oh you're going to be beautiful," Chu added and I chuckled, "Thanks."
"Hyunjin, you need to cut your hair and color it black before you have your wedding," Jeong said, his voice held nothing but business and seriousness.
Hyunjin sighed, finally saying something. He was like his Dad it seemed, there personalities. "My hair is fine," he muttered taking a bite of his food. He was in a bad mood and I was too honestly, I just covered it up a bit better than him. I didn't have to worry about him thinking it's real either because we both knew our nice act to each other only exist when we're around our parents.
"You're cutting it. No more room for discussion," he muttered, his tone final. It kind of bothered me because it seemed this entire time, he was just being rude for no reason. I mean, I was no better but I had very good reasons.
Hyunjin dropped his chopsticks and abruptly stood up, making the chair beneath him screech against the floor. "I'm done," he said clipped, walking out of the room. I stared at him in shock and Chu nervously laughed, "He's tired..." she trailed.
I looked over at Jeong seeing he was very upset but masked it well. He clenched his fist and his knuckles were white but his face was completely calm. I darted my eyes away from him quickly so he wouldn't catch me staring.
A small part of me felt bad for him suddenly. His dad was angry over his hair, something so small. But I didn't blame him for getting up, I wanted to do the same but I wouldn't disrespect his family like that.
Soon dinner was over and I was pulling on my coat. Hyunjin was standing there but that's because his parents forced him to stand there. My mom had already left and I was starting to get annoyed with everyone trying to push us together.
I zipped my coat up and looked up at him to find him staring down at me. I pulled my eyes away and walked out the door without saying anything. Our parents had already set us up for another dinner tomorrow and I wanted to cut my own head off.
