As Zayn stood on the edge of that bridge, the one he had so many mixed feelings about, he took a drag of his cigarette. The humour of him smoking before he was about to die wasn't enough to bring a smile to his face, but recently nothing could. He had realized that the frown was permanently etched into his skin, never to tilt up with laughter again. After his parents had died, he had stopped talking to his friends and started smoking. A lot. Now all his money that wasn't going to food was for cigarettes, his only escape from everything. Taking one last drag from it, he tossed it over the edge and watched it fall until he could faintly see it hit the dark, ominous water. He looked forward to joining it. He looked up at the sky and closed his eyes, trying to encapture how the stars looked just one more time. "Wait! Don't jump!" an unfamiliar voice called from behind him. Curious as to who was actually out of the house at 2:30am, he turned around and met eyes with a beautiful stranger. "Please don't jump, just get down and we can talk it out." the stranger yet again pleaded with him. "Why do you care?" Zayn was long past using emotion, keeping a flat, lifeless tone. "I don't want you to die, just, get down and we can talk." Zayn stood there for what seemed like ages before stepping off the edge of the bridge, turning to the stranger. "Why do you care to talk to me?" "Well, I don't know. I just felt the need to come to the bridge while I was jogging and then I saw you and couldn't stop myself from coming over." The stranger looked down nervously and messed with his fingers for a bit before adding,"Want to be friends? I mean, I know we only just met, and I don't even know your name, but we could be friends." "Zayn. My name's Zayn." "Liam." For the first time in months, Zayn felt his lips turn up in a smile. "Want one?" he offered, holding the pack of cigarettes out. "Nah, I don't smoke." Looking back at the dark water, Zayn tossed his cigarettes over the edge and watched them fall. "Neither do I."
