“Hi, Mrs. Calawine,” Gregg answered. He smiled at her and stepped in the door. “I’m here to talk to Miranda, it’s urgent.” The mom smiled at him and let him in. She pointed towards the upstairs and before Gregg entered her room, he knocked. When he knew it was okay, he went in. Miranda was a little startled but she let him come in the room. “Hey, Miranda.”
“Hello.” She seemed excited at first but then looked at the book beside her bed. She smiled once more but continued to read until Gregg cleared his throat. “Yes?”
“We need to talk.” Hearing the serious tone in his voice, Miranda put the book down and made room for him on her bed. She blinked twice at him and he sighed. “I think we need…” Gregg stared at his hands and refused to look at Miranda. He didn’t really want to see her expression just in case it was hurt.
"Gregg?” Miranda put her hand on his knee and he looked up. She showed a caring smile and lifted her hand away from his knee. “I think I know what you want to talk to me about.” In order to avoid him, she stood up and started looking through her room. Even though she knew where everything was, she decided to make sure nothing was missing.
“You do?” he asked. Miranda barely nodded and instead of exactly answering the question, she started playing with some of her old things. “Are you okay with it?” Miranda didn’t do or say anything. “Miranda?”
When she turned around, her face was red and she was saddened. “I was thinking about it for a while and I asked the girls. It was a tie all the way around.”
“Let me guess, Joy wanted us to breakup.”
"No. She wasn’t.” Gregg seemed surprised and Miranda managed to smile. “I know she didn’t like us together, but I think she was saddened that we weren’t going to be together.” When Gregg had a confused face on, Miranda held her hand. “Never mind, it’s confusing anyway.”
“Friends?” he asked. Miranda nodded her head and sat down next to him. She put her head on his shoulders and he wrapped his arms around her.
“I thought this would be easier.” Miranda sniffled a little and then got up. “Well, I guess you should go.”
Gregg nodded his head and before he opened the door, he was going to give Miranda a kiss. She backed down and smiled at him. Instead he tried to hug her, but Miranda pushed his chest away. She smiled again and eventually held her hand out. Gregg shook it but pulled Miranda into a hug. Neither of them pulled away until Suzie cleared her throat. Both of their faces got red and they both said goodbye again. When he was gone, Miranda sat down on her bed and grabbed her stuffed animal. She gave it a giant squeeze and Suzie sat down beside her.
“Did it… Did it happen?” she asked. Miranda nodded her head and sniffled again. “You okay?” Miranda sniffled once and then sat up.
“I think so.” She lay down again and thought, finally throwing her animal. “It’s just going to be hard to be single again.”
“Well…” Suzie tried to think of something encouraging to say, but she couldn’t think of anything. “I’m single too. We could be single together.”
“I guess I’ll always have my friends.” She instantly wiped her nose with the back of her hand and went to her eyes. She was surprised to see that she wasn’t crying about the breakup. She wasn’t necessarily taking it hard, but she really liked him. Then she remembered, she only liked him because he brought her to the nurse’s office when she needed to be there.
“What about when you’re with Joy and Crystal?” Suzie asked.
“I could live. Lenny and John are my friends too.”
