The sea was cold but it felt familiar, I stared at the tail that replaced my legs. My mouth could talk, without swallowing mouthfuls of ocean water. And I could breathe.
Maybe I'm dead. Maybe I've died and this is only my spirit. That's it, I've died.
"Instead of gaping you might want to take a look around you." Chun-Hei hissed as she held out her hand. "Because a few sailors seem to be taking out a fancy to you." In the center of her hand was a ring, with a steady glow the ring was replaced with an ornate, jagged dagger. It glowed with a blade sharp and deadly. "Lucky for us, they're in our territory." She nodded towards a nearby large rock. "Hide there and wait."
She didn't wait for me within a few flaps of her tail she had faced the sailors. They held knives between their teeth but swam with an efficiency only someone familiar with the sea could. With a flick of her wrist, Chun-Hei had raced towards one and left a bloody smile on his throat.
She whipped to the other sailor who already began to kick his feet before swimming towards her again. This one was thin and moved with swiftness, dodging her as she swiped at him with the dagger. Slowly his face began to turn red and he looked up to the surface of the water. He began to kick his feet while watching Chun-Hei, his dagger out. But he didn't stand a chance with losing air, his swings were weak and he only managed giving Chun-Hei a scratch with his blade before she stabbed her pointed blade through his throat, the tip coming out on the other side of his throat, coated in thick blood and human tissue. The blood mixed into the water, I looked away
Chun-Hei wasn't fazed.
I remained behind the rock, I felt useless but there wasn't much I could do. My tail moved of its own accord, keeping me upright. I stared at it in awe as it moved between the water, involuntary, just like breathing. I looked up to see Chun-Hei swimming to me, cutting through the water with effortless grace. She grabbed my arm, "Quickly, they'll be tied up above water."
"What's happening above water?" I asked as she drags me along with her deeper into the sea, the cold water providing comfort as we swam deeper. Schools of fish passed us by but dispersed into several directions when they came too close.
"Pan and Hook are battling it out," she smirked at me. "Gives us time to escape."
"To where?"
"Nearby cove, Waterhell. Beside Waterhell is a nearby island."
"What?"
"C'mon, don't tell me you thought Neverland was a tiny island in the middle of nowhere." I quieted because that was exactly what I thought.
"How far is it?" I asked instead.
"Full night of swimming." She looked up above us, we had passed by the ships.
"My friend is still on Pan's ship."
"The mermaid?" She shrugs. "She'll be fine. Mermaids are coveted, after all. They won't kill her."
"I have to get her," I pull away from Chun-Hei. "She'd go back for me."
"No she wouldn't," Chun-Hei replies smoothly, stopping. "She'd be dead. This is siren territory." She levels a look at me, staring me down. "Your friend is a mermaid, she'll be fine. You can go back for her later, but unless you want to be sliced up into tiny ribbons by Pan's crew you better move. Bloody ribbons can't save their best friend."
"Why are you helping me?"
She looked at me for a moment before shaking her head. "I don't know, because a baby siren is the last thing I need right now. But, we don't leave each other behind. Siren's are hunted too much to hunt each other." She looked forward and began to swim, her red tail following behind her.
