The soft patter of the rain was the only sound heard as Armin stared into the distance.
He was sitting on the stairs, his hood covering his head and casting a shadow on his eyes.
He held tightly on the conch shell in his hands.
The same shell he got from the first time he saw the ocean, he remembered the excitement he felt, the wonder, the joy, the satisfaction, the sea was the first step towards his dream.
And he was at sea when he confessed to her.
Yes, that moment, she thanked him and asked why, why did he come to see her within four years without knowing if she would even get out of that crystal? Why waste four years talking to a girl that wouldn't even respond?
'I wanted-no... I want to see you'
He closed his eyes, remembering her face, her smile, her laugh, even her stoic expression.
'Annie... ' The girl's name echoed in his head, his thoughts slowly drowning the sound of rain, he too was drowning in pain.
"Armin"
"Wha...?" He suddenly looked up at Mikasa who was now sitting next to him, He was so in thought of Annie that he'd almost forgotten the sound of his own name.
"Oh, Mikasa, sorry i... Didn't notice you there" He moved his gaze towards the conch shell, his grip now softening.
The Ackerman girl stared at him for a while before sighing.
"You'll get cold out here"
"Hmm? It doesn't bother me"
"You're soaking from head to toe, Armin"
The blonde boy chuckled a bit.
" I'll be fine, Mikasa"
Mikasa looked at him once more, the hood covered Armin's eyes yet she swore she could see tears flowing, or was it rain?
He's in pain, she knew that, but what could she do?
"Let's... Go hang out with the others"
Armin stayed quiet for a moment, then he looked at his childhood friend with a soft smile on his face, his eyes now visible with sadness and traces of tears.
"I'll be staying here a bit longer."
"Then I'll be sitting here with you"
" Mikasa, you don't have t-"
" I'm staying with you"

The sound of the waves and the soothing breeze had never felt so satisfying for Armin, not like today.
He was sitting next to her, to Annie.
Armin had just "confessed" to the girl, at the time he felt like he could just spill his thoughts, he was comfortable, he has been doing it for four years after all.
"... I still wanna believe there's still a world we don't know about out there"
Annie stared at him, listening, yet there was still something...
