Donghyuck let out a deep breath, running his calloused fingers through his wet hair as the shower water poured over him in a relentless torrent of water. He reached out then, placing his hands on the shower wall across from him as he bowed his head, letting the water fall onto his neck before it fell in curving coils down his back before disappearing down the drain. He cocked his head side to side in an attempt to loosen the knots that had formed in his neck and he let out another breath, drinking in the rare moments of isolation and relaxation.
The intern had spent hours on end working on his shift, picking up the extra hours that his partner so dutifully neglected as he disappeared for hours on end. Donghyuck grimaced in dissatisfaction, but he reminded himself to let it go. Mark was currently taking over his other duties as repayment to his hard-working partner so it would all work itself out.
After another moment or two, Donghyuck straightened up and twisted the knob to point at the fading 'off' printed onto the metal. He drew the curtain back and grabbed the towel hanging next to the shower, eyeing his clean scrubs with a mix of eagerness from the cold that had now descended upon him and the begrudging motive of not wanting to get back to work.
But alas, it was only ten minutes later that Donghyuck found himself walking back down the hallway to the breakroom where he had left Renjun under the supervision of other nurses, digging the last shower droplets from his inner ear in discomfort. Turning into the room, Donghyuck's eyes immediately fell on the familiar boy, feeling a small smile tug onto his face as he recognized the familiar messy tufts of brown hair.
The patient, surprisingly older by a couple of months, was sitting by himself at a table, the top covered in various coloring crayons and pieces of blank paper. Donghyuck beckoned one of the nurses over. "How was he?"
"All good, he seemed very adamant about having the coloring supplies, but he wouldn't tell me what they were for because I didn't have the brain capacity to understand," the nurses explained, a bit vexed at the end and Donghyuck let a small snicker escape his lips, giving the man a thankful nod before heading over to the patient.
"Hey Renjunnie, what's happening?" Donghyuck said softly as to not startle the boy but to no avail. At the sound of his voice Renjun jumped slightly, turning around immediately with wide eyes that melted into one of the sweetest smile, the patient's eyes sparkling when he saw Donghyuck.
"Hey," Renjun responded happily, his hands moving to carefully cover his picture, "I-I made you something." Renjun's cheeks reddened and Donghyuck's eyebrows rose in surprise, settling himself next to Renjun.
Donghyuck would be lying if he said that Renjun didn't hold a special place in his heart. He favored the boy and anyone who was paying attention could see that, luck for him that Mark was as oblivious as he looked and Chenle didn't have a preference for him. There was something about the soft way that Renjun regarded him and the way that he trusted Donghyuck so whole-heartedly, even if it was partially due to the fact that Renjun saw him as a literal angel.
"You drew something for me?" Donghyuck prompted and Renjun nodded, sliding the previously covered picture over to him. Donghyuck adjusted it so that he could see it better, his eyes widening in shock and his mouth dropping open in awe.
The boy was an artist; truly someone of clear talent in the arts. With the limited selection of colors that the boy had he had drawn a sunset scene. The sun was shaded varying shades of blended yellow, orange, and red around the edges. From there the sky's colors turned from warm to cool, the warmer tones surrounding the sun and then blending out to cool tones of purple and blue and then a darker navy-black at the farthest edges.
Then there was a hill; a tree; and most importantly, two people. With the combined tools of the graphite core of a pencil and the varying colors of pigmented and condensed wax, there were shadows resting on the hill casted by the tree and two sitting figures. Both were drawn with great detail even without their faces being drawn, but the two rather facing the failing sun.
"Renjun this is..." Donghyuck trailed off in amazement, blinking to make sure that he wasn't dreaming, "...this has to be one of the best drawings I've ever seen. I would frame this and put it in an art museum if I could. This is stunning. You're so talented," Donghyuck finished, looking up at Renjun who was bright red in the face, glancing down at his lap.
"It's not for a museum, it's for you," Renjun scrunched his nose and looked up before pointing at the figures, "I drew us, so that it's personal for you. I've only seen the sun setting once before, that I can remember, so...so I'd like to see it again with you."
Donghyuck felt his heart and chest tighten at the words and the sincerity in Renjun's eyes. The nurse looked down at the drawing and smiled softly. "Okay Renjun, when you get out of here I'll take you to see the sunset. I promise. Just like in your drawing."
Renjun smiled at the promise and held out his pinkie, Donghyuck quick to intertwine his around the patient's smaller one. They both smiled at each other for a moment.
It was a pinkie promise.
