I got out of my car and walked towards the front doors, the sounds of my heels clicking on the pavement. I opened the doors and stepped quickly towards the metal detector and the two regular security guards. The main guard, who normally mean mugged me, stared at me with his mouth slightly open. I dropped my purse on the table in front of him and walked through. After clearing, I walked past the detector to the other side of the table and stopped in front of him. He remembered what he was supposed to be doing and quickly searched my purse.
He handed it back and looked as if he was going to say something, but I walked off quickly and met the nurse at the second set of doors. She smiled and me and said, "Welcome back, Ms. Laurent; I love your skirt, by the way." I smiled and said, "Thanks, how's Clara been?" She looked at me surprised but answered, "She's been all right; she hasn't spoken since you left, but she seems a little more alert since you left." I said, "That's great." She looked at me oddly but didn't say anything else.
When we got to my sister's room, she opened the door and walked ahead of me, saying, "Clara, your sister came back to visit you again." She walked out of my way and let me head toward the table, allowing Clara to see me. That moment was when my sister showed the most emotion I had seen in the last year. Her eyes got kind of wide, and her mouth opened slightly before she shut it quickly and dulled her eyes again. The nurse noticed and stared at her, shocked momentarily before saying, "W... well, I'll leave you, ladies, alone. Please let me know when you are ready to leave." I smiled brightly and said, "Thank you."
The door closed, and my sister stared at me. I smiled and said, "Heard you've been a little more alert lately; that's great to hear." She looked at me, and despite trying to hold the dead look, she had a hint of curiosity in her eyes. I said, "Mom and Dad are planning to drop in later this week; they are doing well. They've been spending a lot of time with me lately. After I last left, we had a little heart-to-heart. I think they understand me a little better.
She got a dark look in her eyes but didn't say anything or change her expression. I continued, looking at my freshly done nails casually, "We went to dinner last night. It was a nice time. Dad took us to that nice steakhouse we like close to the house, remember? It was great, and you know Dad's always spoiling us. He gave me a couple of hundred dollars just for the hell of it. Jalissa and I are going to have a girls' day on Friday. We are taking off, going to go to that nice spa and then go shopping. Mom secretly booked it for us on Dad, you know she loves to do that, and he just goes with her every time."
I laughed lightly, studying my sister's face. I finally figured out that the best way to get to my sister was to do the exact thing that triggered her in the first place, seem special to everyone around me. I wasn't lying. All of this happened, but because Dad felt so bad about what happened, he just paid for it and huffed me away, giving me the money. Dad's always been terrible with emotion. He was a loving father, but feelings befuddled him, so he ended up doing sweet or spoiled things like this to express himself. Mom tried to get him for years, but she was so used to it, it was easier just to let him do him.
I also knew that looking like her shit wasn't affecting me, and I was living both hers and my best life would get to her too. Sunday, I went to my nail tech and my stylist. I got my hair bone straight and parted on the side, hanging over my shoulders and down my back. My nails were done with a black ombre with a full rhinestone nail on each side. My makeup was flawless, and I wore my black pumps, black pencil skirt, and black short-sleeved button-up with gold jewelry tastefully decorating it. Basically, I looked like fucking good times and money. Now though, I was ready to put the nail in the fucking coffin.
I looked her dead in her eyes this time, making sure I wouldn't miss it. "By the way, Jason and Marcus wanted me to tell you hello, and they hope you are doing ok."
And just like I knew, her eyes flew open, and her face got the ugliest expression. She looked livid.
"They came over on Saturday to check on me. you can't imagine how awkward that shit was." I laughed and said, "They showed up at the same damn time with flowers, right? So, they are standing there, just mugging each other, both looking pissed as hell. I would have thought that one would have left or some shit, but they both came in. It took a minute, but I actually got them to sit and be cool for a minute."
Now her face had a deadly look on it. It started to look like it did the night that tried to kill our ass. She was absolutely livid at that point.
"Anyway, they aren't besties or anything, but they were civil for a moment. They left, but I chatted with them both after. I'm seeing Marcus on Sunday and Jason on Saturday. I think it'll be fun."
She looked at that moment. She wanted to kill me, but I swiftly pushed the button and stood up. I said, "Well, I'll be sure to visit again. I'll make sure that I tell Mom and Dad that you are doing well."
The nurse walked in and said, "Leaving?" I smiled and said, "Yes, I have other things I have to get to this evening." She nodded and stood back to let me through the door. I reached the doorway, turned, and said, "Love you, sis," then walked down the hall. Before I left completely, I heard my sister scream, "Bitch!" at the top of her lungs. I saw two more nurses hurry toward the direction of her voice. I had a massive smile on my face as I walked past the security guards again and out the door.
I hopped in my car and sat and laughed to myself. In the middle of my ridiculous laughter, my phone started ringing. I looked and saw that Jalissa was calling me. As soon as I answered, I heard the high-pitched, ecstatic voice of my best friend screaming,
"I'm getting married!"
