New Beginnings

THE ONE THING THAT HUNTER SALTZMAN HATED about leaving his hometown was leaving his cousin Sky behind. She was more like a sister to him and the two of them always took on their problems together. She was a year and a half younger and he was afraid that she wouldn't be able to cope with him gone.

Their family was insane, after all.

Of course he was underestimating her, she was a strong girl. You have to be when everyone in your family dies in terrible or mysterious ways. There was always the fear of being next but, it was best to push that to the back of her mind, at least for the time being.

"Are you sure you'll be okay? I can hitch a ride back here and get some money for my own apartment if I have to." Hunter offered, rubbing the back of his neck with a sigh. Sky was the one person alive he cared about more then himself and he would rather suffer than to see her be the odd one out in the family.

"I'm not worried about me, i'm worried about you going to Mystic Falls with your uncle, i've been out there for a weekend,  and that place is so boring." Sky folded her arms across her chest, smiling slightly. "I feel bad for you."

"I can handle a school full of boring do no wrong rich kids if you can handle the family without me, kid." Hunter smiled and pulled his cousin into a big hug. He didn't want to admit that he'd miss her, he wasn't one for emotions.

Getting too close to someone was inevitably bad.

"It'll be tough but I can handle them, it's not like they are going to do much besides whine and complain." Sky returned the hug and laughed, her eyes threatening to release a pool of tears.

A horn beeped outside signifying that Alaric was outside to pick Hunter up as he took his arms off of his cousin.

"I guess it's time for me to jump in the deep end." Hunter took a cigarette out from his pocket and placed it between his lips."See you around, S."

"If you last that long in Mystic Falls." Sky joked, she of course was talking about dying of boredom, they didn't know the actual dangers on the small town.

Oh, and there were dangers, many of them.

WALKING AROUND MYSTIC FALLS WAS LIKE WALKING around in a whole new world. Everyone was smiling, and greeting each other, posters for future parades and parties were posted in the square, and there was no end to the amount of children there were running around. All in all, it honestly seemed like a happy place.

Hunter hated that.

"Where am I supposed to sleep? There is only one bed." The boy pointed out as he threw his bags on the floor of Alaric's apartment.

"On the couch." The Saltzman man smiled sarcastically, him and his nephew already having troubles getting along.

"Are you sure dad didn't have another brother? Possibly a rich one who doesn't work at my new school?" The young Saltzman questioned as he plopped down on the uncomfortable couch he would now be calling his bed.

"If he did i'd like to meet him and ask him for some money." Alaric replied, pouring himself a glass of bourbon. "So... have any girlfriends or anything?"

"I really do hope you have a life uncle Ric, I don't want you snooping in mine." Hunter replied, he already knew he would be getting in trouble, as much as people tried to warn him, it was his thing, it seemed as if the boy loved trouble.

It followed him everywhere he went.

"I'll mind my business as long as you fix your grades, I was looking at them and you need to do better Hunter, you don't even have one passing grade in any of your classes." The older Saltzman sighed, already stressed by the duties he was taking on.

"I've been busy taking care of my dying mom, do you need a better excuse? I've got thousands." Hunter retorted, kicking his feet up as he rested them on the coffee table.

"This has been happening for years, it's a miracle you have even passed any grade past middle school." Alaric informed the boy who didn't care much about school anyways.

"Magic is a hell of a thing." The young Saltzman boy grinned. "Sky helps in that department."

"That's another thing, you can't just go around flaunting your powers. There are people here that will use them against you." The older man rubbed his temples knowing it would be hard to get through to his nephew. "This place is dangerous when you aren't careful."

"Don't worry about me, uncle Ric." Hunter sent his uncle a short wink, folding his arms against his chest. "I'm always careful."
