Chapter 16: Two Years
"How are you?"
"Hanging in."
"You promise?"
"I promise. How's the baby?"
"He's good. He's happy like... all the time." There was a fond smile in Kevin's voice, and Mitch almost smiled in return.
Almost.
"What have you been up to? Any music?"
"Kev, you know I'm not going to make music anymore."
"...I know. Wishful thinking, I guess. Scott had been so excited for you for MG1."
There was what seemed to be an eternity of silence.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have..."
"It's okay, Kev. I don't want to avoid talking about him. Not anymore. That wouldn't be fair to him. Six months of silence about him is enough."
"I'm glad to hear you say that. How's therapy?"
"It's good." And it was. Mitch had found a new therapist after the one that had ruined his life with his horrible advice. This new one was kind and understanding, all while holding him accountable.
"You're hanging out with Austin a lot, right?"
"Yeah... it's a nice distraction. We take pictures and stuff. Just staying away from the music."
"And the internet."
"Yes. And the internet."
Unplugging from social media had been the best decision of Mitch's life. He felt lighter. He felt like he could be completely authentic for the first time in a decade.
He felt like he wasn't being scrutinized with every step, every breath.
He probably still was, but at least he didn't know it.
And yes, it was extremely difficult to fight the urge to look at his mentions on Twitter, just once in a while. But he was proud to say that he hadn't done so since the day he deactivated.
"Are you ready for the show?"
Mitch took a deep breath, his eyes clenched shut.
"I don't think so."
"I think it will be good for us. A way to close the book."
"I hope you're right."
Mitch felt sick.
"We have a very special performance tonight," Tori Kelly announced, and the audience could see the unshed tears in her eyes as she spoke. "Five voices that have been silent for six months will come together once more, to bring their story to a close for all of you tonight. No strangers to the Grammy stage, and good friends of mine, please join me in welcoming Pentatonix, joined by original member, Avi Kaplan.
The audience stood immediately, cheering and whistling as the stage lights went dark.
A spotlight illuminated the five of them where they stood surrounding a single microphone. They waited until the cheers subsided before taking a collective deep breath.
A light in the room
It was you who was standing there
Tried it was true
As your glance met my stareBut your heart drifted off
Like the land split by sea
I tried to go, to follow,
To kneel down at your feet
