The sounds of explosions and screaming filled the air, the smell of smoke and ash was overwhelming, and Techno's lungs burned.

Techno

He hadn't been there. At least, he didn't remember being there. Why was he there now? All he knew was that he was running, blindly waving his arms in front of him and coughing as the smoke filled his lungs and burned him like a flame being held to his skin. He could hear screaming, but he couldn't tell who it was. Was it Wilbur? No, Wilbur was dead.

Wilbur was dead

Techno hadn't really gotten over the loss of Wilbur. Everyone had seemed to stop and grieve before returning to life, as if he hadn't existed at all. Once the flowers and condolences stopped he was expected to move on, to get up on his feet and help fix this mess. This mess Wilbur created.

Did Techno get over the loss?

No was the short answer, but the long answer was that he had shoved every emotion and memory of Wilbur down deep into his brain, as if they were a prized possession he couldn't lose. The memories were like a rare crystal, one that he couldn't just make again. One he couldn't afford to lose.

Maybe that's why these nightmares plagued him every night.

Techno woke with a jolt, sitting up in his bed and looking across the room to the window.
His room shone as it reflected the cold glaze of the moon, covering everything with a hazy blue glow. It reminded Techno of the time Wilbur and him had went to the bay at night, swinging their feet over the dock and dipping their toes into the ice cold water underneath them. It was a beautiful night, the warm breeze pushing through Techno's long braid like a baby cow in a thicket of grass and Wilbur's wavy mop of hair like paint on a paintbrush. The stars has looked beautiful that night, like little lanterns in the sky, as if space was a whole other city.

Wilbur is with the stars now.

Those words hurt to think about. They stung like a wasp and left a sour taste in your mouth while threatening your eyes with tears you didn't know you had. Like a rope had been tied around your ankle and you're sinking, down, down, down. You can't breath, you feel like it's just a bad dream and that when you open your eyes they'll still be there, just waking you up to tell you how silly you are for sleeping in. Oh, how Techno wished that it was all a bad dream.

But you can't reverse the past
And you can't escape it either.

It wasn't long before Techno stood outside on the rocky path that was covered in snow with nothing but his t-shirt and socks. In his defense, Tommy had always been a light sleeper, and Techno didn't want to risk upsetting the kid more than he already was. So here he stood, freezing, starting at the stars.

And then he closed his eyes

"Hey Wil, I know you won't hear this but, haha, I sound like an idiot doing this. I'm still crying over you y'know? All those good memories. I realize now that the little quarrels we had didn't matter, and that you were right Wil, it wasn't meant to be. I hope you're not mad, wherever you are. I love ya Wil, as a brother, and as a friend. I'm sorry it had to be you"

Crunch.
Techno opens his eyes
Crunch.
He turns

"Hey Techno, are you ok? It's freezing out here."

"Yeah Tommy, sorry if I woke ya."

"You're fine, let's go back inside though, it's cold."

Crunch

Crunch

Crunch

"Techno?"

"Yeah Tommy?"

"Do you ever miss Wilbur?"
