As soon as I released his arm, he got up and tried to get as far as possible from me. I would be lying if I would say it didn't hurt. I watched him leave the kitchen with sad eyes and a small frown on my face. Sighing, I looked at my unfinished sandwich and suddenly I wasn't really hungry anymore. I took the sandwiches and put them in the fridge; you never know, it could be useful. I washed the dishes and the table before going to the bathroom to take a shower.
I closed my eyes and enjoyed the warm water falling on my back for a moment. During this short moment, I thought about nothing and it was a great feeling. Something I didn't feel for a long time. I turned the water off when it was beginning to get cold. I wrapped a black, fluffy towel around my waist and got out to get some clothes.
I entered into the main bedroom and quickly put some boxers on. Just when I was about to take a shirt, I heard a small, almost inaudible whimper. It was so full of despair that it broke my heart. I turned around and saw a bump under the covers. Closing the wardrobe, I slowly removed the covers. Under it, I discovered Kek. He was sleeping and seemed to have a nightmare as he was shaking and crying. Gently, I put one of my hands on his shoulder in an attempt to wake him up. Instead, the whimpers and the crying got louder and stronger.
"Shhh... Calm down, it's me..." I whispered, trying to calm him down. I sat on the bed and took him in my arms. He began to shake even more but didn't wake up.
"Please, please, please... Don't do it again... I-It hurts so much... Please..." He said between sobs while pulling me closer. He seemed so broken, so fragile... I whispered some sweet things into his ear until he calmed down. It took longer than I thought it would but I was glad he finally calmed down. I tried to remove his arms from my waist but his hold only got stronger. Well, I guess I will take a nap then...
I guess I fell asleep because when I opened my eyes, I was alone. I was holding a pillow but Kek wasn't there anymore. I got up, rubbing my eyes while leaving the bedroom. When I entered into the living room, I sighed feeling relieved. He was standing in front of the window and was looking outside. He still had the blank look I hated; his eyes were so full of life before! I stopped next to him and watched him from the corner of my eyes. He didn't move, he was behaving as if I wasn't here at all. It was a bit like his body was there but not his mind and it was really scary.
"Hey... Do you feel better? You cried in your sleep and you didn't want to let me go... Do you remember anything?" I asked, watching him with concerned eyes. Slowly, he turned his head and stared at me. He had no emotions on his face and I wish I could read his mind. I raised my hand and, after making sure he was still watching me, I took his hand into mine. I could feel it shake slightly at the contact but he didn't try to remove it. Kek was staring at our hands before slowly meeting my eyes. His eyes were empty and it seemed like he was waiting for something. "Are you hungry? There are sandwiches in the fridge but I could make you something else..." I told him in a gentle voice.
He blinked a few times before removing his hands from mine. He walked toward the fridge, opened it and took some sandwiches. He sat on a chair and took a small bit. When he was almost finished with his first one, he got up and took a sandwich before putting it on the counter next to me. Then, he sat back on the chair and continued to eat as if nothing happened. His look was exactly as before, blank. I smiled at little and took the sandwich from the counter. Maybe something happened at the hospital, something that changed him but I couldn't lose hope. I was sure that the Kek I knew was still there, waiting the right occasion to come back. I ate, standing next to the counter while watching him. Yes, I was sure he was still there. And I will definitively bring him back, no matter what.

Weeks passed on slowly and I was really busy: taking care of a farm was a full time job. Every weekend, I was going in town to sell our homemade products like eggs, butter or milk. Obviously, I was going there alone. Kek never left the farm and it was better like this.
Speaking about Kek, nothing really changed. He still didn't say anything except when he was sleeping. To my opinion, he was reliving some past moments and waking him up and calming him down was the hardest thing to do. His bad part seemed to have disappeared which was a great thing as I couldn't imagine how bad it would be if it was coming back. Especially in the middle of nowhere.
I've been planning a surprise for a while now and I was going to give it to him in a few minutes. I couldn't wait to see his reaction. I wanted more than anything to see emotions in his eyes, anything! So, I bought him a dog, a Great Dane to be precise. She was black with some white parts and had dark brown eyes. She was only two months old but she was already so big! Right now, she was in the living room, a nice lady just brought it here while Kek was playing with the goats in the stable.
I closed the door behind me and walked toward him. He looked at me when he heard my steps and the small smile he had on his lips disappeared. "I've a surprise for you in the living room. You should come." I explained while waiting for him to take my hand so I could help him to get up.
He took my hand after staring at it for a few minutes as if it would change into a monster or something. When he did, I gave him a small smile and led him to the living room. Just before opening the door, I put my hands on his eyes. He tensed at the contact but relaxed when he realized that it was just me and that I wasn't going to hurt him. I opened the door and we entered into the room where the puppy was sniffing around.
I removed my hand and stared at him, waiting to see his reaction. He looked around the room, trying to find his surprise but then his eyes landed on the puppy. He stared at it for a few minutes, his eyes were blank and without a smile. After a few minutes, a small smile began to appear on his face as he began to walk toward the puppy which was now waving his tail.
He went on his knees and put one of his hands on the puppy's head and began to pet her. She barked happily and jumped on him, making him fall on his ass. He chuckled before hugging her tightly.
I watched them, feeling really happy. It's been a long time since I saw him smile and laugh in front of me. Even if I knew it wasn't for me, it was still better than nothing. He turned his head toward me and, after looking at me for a few seconds, whispered a small 'thank you' before turning back to his dog.
My smile was now so large that it hurt. He was getting better, I knew it. It was just a small step but it meant a lot. "How are you going to call her?" I asked, sitting next to him on the floor.
"Faucheuse." He answered with a smirk while looking at his dog with love in his eyes.
Faucheuse?! Oh my god....
